Apheros Pioneers New Cooling Solutions For Sustainable Data Centers

Swiss startup secures funding to tackle rising energy demands with innovative metal foam technology

Data centers are the backbone of our digital infrastructure, and they're facing some serious challenges. With increasing energy consumption, especially due to the demands of AI and high-performance computing, the need for sustainable cooling solutions is growing.

Recently, the Swiss startup Apheros announced it secured $1.85 million to advance its innovative cooling technology aimed at drastically reducing energy use. Founded as a spin-off from ETH Zurich, Apheros has developed unique metal foam technology poised to tackle the pressing energy needs of data centers.

Currently, cooling data centers accounts for about six percent of the world's energy consumption, and projections show this might rise significantly by 2030. The traditional air-based cooling methods just can’t keep up with the demands of modern technology, pushing industries to explore smarter and greener solutions.

Apheros’ patented metal foam structures have open porosity and vastly increased surface area—up to 1,000 times more than traditional methods. This innovative design enhances heat transfer and flow properties, significantly improving cooling efficiency.

“What we have is not just about cooling; it’s about redefining thermal management for the data centers of tomorrow,” said Julia Carpenter, co-founder and CEO of Apheros. She highlighted the startup’s vision is to set new industry standards and push for greater sustainability.

The technology behind this metal foam can be easily integrated with existing cooling systems, allowing data centers to adapt without major overhauls. This adaptability is key, especially as the industry looks to tackle current energy challenges and meet climate protection goals.

Carpenter noted, “With this funding, we aim to scale production and expand our research and development efforts, paving the way for substantial improvements across the sector.” This fresh capital is not just for growth but also facilitates the development of their groundbreaking cooling solutions.

Apheros isn't alone; the industry is witnessing numerous players working on innovative cooling technologies. Competitors range from established firms such as Kelvion and Alfa Laval to new entrants like Corintis.

One of the primary advantages Apheros has is its focus on compatibility. Their metal foam technology works well with the increasing shift toward liquid cooling systems, helping to optimize performance.

By encapsulating chips within the foam, they increase the surface area, allowing heat to dissipate more rapidly. This means data centers can maintain performance without running up massive energy bills.

According to recent reports, data centers consumed approximately 460 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity globally, with projections indicating this could exceed 1,000 TWh by 2026. That’s equivalent to the entire electricity consumption of Japan!

Schneider Electric, another key player, recently updated its White Space portfolio aimed at supporting high-density applications. Their new offerings aim to meet regulatory compliance and address the increased cooling demands prompted by AI workloads.

Their NetShelter SX Gen2 enclosures can support 25% more weight than older models, optimizing storage for heavy equipment typical of modern data centers. Improved airflow features also assist significantly in cooling high-performance configurations.

Marc Garner, Senior Vice President at Schneider Electric, emphasized the need to innovate as the digital world evolves rapidly. Their recent advancements indicate the industry’s commitment to blending technology and sustainability.

Liquid cooling has emerged as the go-to alternative for many data centers battling excessively high temperatures. Unlike traditional air cooling, which struggles at higher heat densities, liquid cooling efficiently handles powerful components by utilizing fluids to absorb heat more effectively.

Some experts note the significant advantages of using water, as it can hold four times more heat and is way more energy efficient. This technology is particularly beneficial for high-density server racks where loads can exceed 20 kW per rack.

Adding another layer to the efficiency mix, digital twin technology plays a pivotal role. These virtual models allow operators to simulate the entire cooling process, helping them optimize configurations before implementing changes.

This combination of liquid cooling and digital twin technology offers data centers the chance to maximize efficiency, minimize risks, and stay prepared for the heating demands of AI and advanced computing. They enable teams to explore numerous scenarios for different cooling strategies, assisting with energy management and lowering carbon footprints.

Julia Carpenter has voiced her commitment to not only enhancing thermal performance but also contributing positively to the environmental impact of data centers. Amid a rising wave of technology giants seeking improvements, Apheros stands out with its distinctly sustainable approach.

With the backing of venture capital and successful product testing underway, the company is ready to make its mark on the cooling industry. Investors like Lukas Weder from Founderful have expressed optimism about Apheros’s potential to disrupt the market and set new standards.

The technology sector's energy dilemma is acute, but startups like Apheros present hope for sustainable advancements. More efficient cooling solutions are not just desired but necessary to support the next generation of technological innovation.
