Aoyama Gakuin Claims Eighth Victory At 2025 Hakone Ekiden

The race featured strong performances, memorable moments, and controversies surrounding influencer interference.

The 2025 Hakone Ekiden Race saw Aoyama Gakuin University triumph once more, achieving its eighth overall victory with an impressive time of 10 hours and 41 minutes, marking significant moments and controversies throughout the two-day event.

Held on the 2nd and 3rd of January, the Hakone Ekiden is renowned as one of Japan's most prestigious long-distance relay races. Each year the race brings together the finest university teams, creating fierce competition and high stakes among the participants.

Aoyama Gakuin University faced the race with the goal of defending their title and breaking records. Although they started off slow, placing 10th after the first section, the team quickly regained momentum thanks to standout performances from key runners. Notably, Masaya Tsurukawa, from Kyushu Gakuin High School and now a fourth-year student, showcased remarkable determination, climbing the ranks from 10th to 2nd before finishing the segment.

“First and last time at Hakone, but… My running didn’t go as planned, but I could smile the best, so I’m really happy. It’s my best memory,” Tsurukawa shared after his performance. His enthusiasm reflects the spirit of teamwork and determination felt throughout the entire university.

Another highlight came from Haruki Wakabayashi, who took his segment at the mountain’s peak, setting the record for the fastest time of the section, leading Aoyama to their eventual victory. With each runner tackling their segment diligently, the team combined efforts resulting in a beautiful example of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

Diving deep behind the race's success, Shun Murai, the manager of the training facility Aoyama Gakuin stayed at, commented on the sense of motivation and support among the team. “I think only victories are permitted at this university now,” he stated, indicating the level of high expectations placed on those wearing the Aoyama Gakuin uniform.

Aside from the thrilling race, the event also caught attention due to some unexpected controversies. On the fifth leg of the race, known for its arduous terrain, the presence of social media influencers turned problematic. A male Chinese influencer was caught on camera running alongside Aoyama Gakuin’s Wakabayashi, recording the race and ignoring requests from officials to stay off the course.

The actions of the influencer sparked outrage among fans, who took to social platforms to voice their concerns. “The athletes are risking their lives, and to have outsiders on the course is dangerous and disruptive, not allowed,” reflected numerous comments, underlining the seriousness of the situation. The influencer reportedly has over four million followers on social media, leading to heightened scrutiny of his actions.

Despite the tensions caused by the influencer incident, the event concluded on a high note for Aoyama Gakuin. With their strong instincts and technical prowess on display, Aoyama Gakuin secured the overall championship during the final stretch of the race. Coach Haru Shin expressed pride as well, saying, “I’m elated about the teamwork and record-setting. Our strategy really paid off!”

Awash with elation from their victory, Aoyama Gakuin University will commemorate this achievement with celebratory events, including the Champion's ceremony scheduled for March 8, 2025. The event is aimed at expressing gratitude to everyone who supported them through their victorious campaign and continues to bolster their spirit heading forward.

This year’s Hakone Ekiden showcased unforgettable moments, not only through remarkable athletic performances but also through the camaraderie and passion displayed by runners and supporters alike. Each year, the race continues to amplify the significance of teamwork and dedication, hallmarks of the spirit of the Hakone Ekiden.
