Aoi Ito Makes Strong Miami Open Debut But Falls In First Round

The 20-year-old's journey included a thrilling qualifying round win before a tough battle in the main draw.

The Miami Open women's tennis tournament, a premier WTA1000 event, kicked off on March 18, 2025, Japan time, with great anticipation. Aoi Ito, a 20-year-old tennis star from Japan, made news when she successfully navigated her way through the qualifying rounds to earn a spot in the main draw of her very first Miami Open.

In the qualifiers held on March 17, Ito, ranked 106th in the world, faced significant competition. Seeded 23rd in the qualifying round, she staged a remarkable comeback against 5th seed Eva Lys from Germany. The match was tumultuous, with Ito losing the first set 4-6. However, she rallied, demonstrating tremendous resolve and skill by taking the second set 6-4 and ultimately securing her victory in the final set with a score of 6-2, finishing the match in 2 hours and 26 minutes.

This victory granted Ito access to the main draw, where she was set to face Lauren Davis, ranked 229th in the world, in her debut match on March 19, 2025. Interestingly, the two had never faced off before. Before reaching the main draw, Ito won her first-round qualifying match against 747th-ranked K. Efreinova from France in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, showcasing her strong form.

On the day of her main draw match, she could not secure her first victory at a WTA1000 tournament. Ito fell short against Davis in a gripping contest that lasted nearly three hours, ultimately losing 4-6, 6-3, 4-6. Despite her efforts, this match proved to be a bitter defeat for Ito, who remarked, "I wanted to give my best, but it wasn't enough today," reflecting on her determination amidst rising pressures.

While the loss was a disappointment, Ito's journey at the Miami Open was noteworthy, especially as it was her first appearance at this prestigious event. Her earlier performance in events such as the Qatar TotalEnergies Open and the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships, where she also reached the main draws from qualifying rounds, built her confidence, making her presence in Miami even more significant.

Beyond her singles career, Ito has been selected to represent Japan in the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup, further highlighting her growing stature in the tennis community.

Additionally, this year’s Miami Open features other renowned Japanese players. Naomi Osaka, ranked 61st, is slated to compete by facing qualifier Y. Starodubtseva from Ukraine, while Nao Hibino is matched against S. Lamens from the Netherlands. Another promising player, Sayaka Ishii, has received a wild card into the main draw and will face former US Open champion E. Raducanu from England.

The tournament boasts a total prize pool of $8,963,700 while hosting 96 singles players and 32 doubles teams. This event presents a formidable stage for athletes to showcase their tennis talents on one of the sport’s biggest platforms.

Although Aoi Ito’s journey in the Miami Open concluded sooner than hoped, her recent successes and selected representation in the Billie Jean King Cup signal that her career is on an upward trajectory. As the tournament progresses, fans and analysts alike will keep an eye on Ito and other emerging players from Japan in future matches.
