Anwar Ibrahim Pays Tribute To Manmohan Singh

Malaysian Prime Minister recalls friendship and Singh's influential legacy after his passing.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim paid heartfelt tribute to the late former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26 at the age of 92. Anwar, recalling their deep friendship, described Singh’s immense contributions to India’s economic transformation, calling him 'the midwife of India’s emergence as one of the world’s economic giants.'

Taking to 'X' (formerly Twitter), Anwar expressed his deep sorrow at the news of Singh’s demise, stating, 'The weight of grief bears down on me at the news of the passing of my honoured and cherished friend: Dr. Manmohan Singh.' He added, 'Obituaries, essays, and books aplenty there will surely be about this great man, celebrating him as the architect of India’s economic reforms.'

The Malaysian leader reflected on their shared experiences as finance ministers during the 1990s, asserting, 'I had the rare privilege of witnessing the early years of these transformative policies first-hand.' He emphasized their mutual commitment to combat corruption, noting, 'We shared a fervent commitment to the war against corruption— even collaborating to unravel a major case.'

Anwar Ibrahim’s tribute was not solely professional; it was deeply personal. He recounted Manmohan Singh's remarkable generosity during his own struggles, particularly during his imprisonment from 1999 to 2004. Anwar revealed, 'During the years of my incarceration, he extended a kindness he didn’t have to—one not politically expedient nor appreciated by the Malaysian government at the time.' Singh had offered scholarships for Anwar’s children, especially for his son, Ihsan. Although Anwar declined the offer, the gesture left a lasting impression on him.

'Such a gesture undoubtedly showed his extraordinary humanity and generosity, demonstrative, as the Bard would have it, of a man so full of “the milk of human kindness,”' Anwar reflected, highlighting the unique bond they shared during challenging times. He continued, 'These acts of quiet magnanimity defined him, and they will remain etched in my heart forever.'

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was known for his pivotal role as the architect of India’s economic reforms. He also held significant positions, such as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985. His efforts during his tenure transformed India, setting it on the path to becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies.

Reflecting on Singh’s contributions, Anwar stated, 'Dr. Manmohan Singh was slightly awkward as a politician but undeniably upright, steadfast, and resolute as a statesman. He leaves behind a legacy to inspire generations to come.'

Singh’s passing has drawn condolences and tributes from across the world, as leaders and citizens alike pay their respects to the man who played such a significant role in shaping modern India. Anwar concluded his emotional tribute with, 'Goodbye, my mitra, my bhai, Manmohan.'
