Antwerp is gearing up to host Open Monumentendag 2024, celebrating the city's diverse architectural heritage with the theme focusing on 'holy houses' and religious landmarks across various cultures. The event, which began its tradition back in 1989, promises to be more spectacular this year, as stated by the new acting mayor, Els van Doesburg.
"Antwerp has incredible buildings from all architectural periods," said Griet Langbeen, the coordinator of Open Monumentendag, shedding light on the city's long history with architectural excellence. The event will spotlight structures ranging from the historic Het Steen, recently restored with additional buildings, to the modernist achievements from the 1950s and 60s. This year marks Antwerp's commitment to showcasing its wealth of heritage beyond the established tourist attractions.
Els van Doesburg's first official public appearance as acting mayor coincides with the announcement of Antwerp's role as the host city. "Antwerp is pulling out all the stops as the host city," she remarked, nostalgically noting, "The city has participated since the program began, which happens to be the same year I was born. We’ve always made big contributions, and this year we’re raising the bar even higher." Her enthusiasm sets the stage for what promises to be an engaging event for both locals and visitors.
Much of the day's planning was discussed during the recent meeting held at the Kolveniershof, where organizers from participating cities convened to generate fresh ideas for the upcoming festivities. One of the primary focuses for Antwerp will be on religious heritage, allowing for both Christian and other religious buildings to share the spotlight. "We will shine light on our religious heritage. It won’t just include our churches but also buildings from other faiths," added Langbeen, underscoring the inclusive approach taken this year.
Van Doesburg expressed pride about working daily within the urban monumental framework. Her tenure began at the same time the town hall was reopened after renovations. "When I started as alderman, we were still working out of a functional but unattractive office building. It’s been so rewarding to now be operating out of such historical surroundings. The town hall is truly stunning, and you can feel the history permeate its walls. I encourage everyone to come visit," she declared earnestly.
Reflecting on Antwerp’s remarkable heritage, Van Doesburg reminded how easy it is to take for granted the beauty surrounding everyday life. "Being from Antwerp, we often overlook the magnificence of our city. We live within its museum-like quality, and it’s art to keep the wonder alive every day. You ought to see Antwerp through the eyes of tourists sometimes to appreciate its splendor fully. We tend to forget just how incredible places like the beautiful town hall really are," she reflected.
Open Monumentendag is set to encourage both residents and visitors to engage with the rich history, architecture, and cultural layers embedded within Antwerp’s fabric. With varying activities and festivities planned across the city, there is ample opportunity to discover locations and narratives often hidden away from day-to-day sight.
Antwerp's contribution to Open Monumentendag is expected to not only captivate arch enthusiasts but also create moments for family outings, educational perspectives, and civic pride. By fostering communal respect for the architectural assets, the event seeks to create lasting impressions and memories tied to the city’s history.
Indeed, as preparations for Open Monumentendag 2024 continue, one thing is clear: Antwerp stands ready to welcome everyone to explore and appreciate its dynamic architectural heritage, and the event is sure to illuminate the city’s status as a cultural cornerstone.
