Anticipation Grows For NHK's New Series 'Anpan'

This heartwarming story explores the lives of Anpanman's creator and his supportive wife.

The highly anticipated continuous TV novel 'Anpan' is set to begin broadcasting on NHK on March 31, 2025. This series, which marks the 112th installment, focuses on the life of Takashi Yanase, the creator of the beloved character Anpanman, and his supportive wife Aamako. The narrative will explore their struggles for meaning and purpose, embodying the themes of justice, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams. Actors Miori Imada and Kaito Kitamura are slated to play the leads, Noboru and Iwao, respectively.

During the promotional activities leading up to the show's debut, Imada expressed her gratitude to Yuzuna Nagasawa, who portrays her character's childhood, noting, "I was able to enjoy as a viewer first and foremost, and I'm thankful to Yuzuna for creating such vibrant energy for Noboru." Meanwhile, Kitamura commended the child actors’ efforts, stating, "Their portrayal of Iwao and Noboru has incredible authenticity, making me wonder how they captured it so powerfully." He added, "Yura Kimura, playing Iwao's childhood, shines with such enigmatic charm."

The production team has placed great emphasis on accurately representing the characters' backstories and emotional journeys. Kitamura, who mentioned this is his first time portraying a real historical figure since collaborating with comedian Sanma Akashiya, shared his preparatory process. He delved deeply through various materials, insisting it was necessary to grasp the life of Yanase and Aamako, emphasizing the importance of capturing the essence of two extraordinary individuals.

Imada also spoke about how the couple’s life and the character they embody reflect on the significance of their timeless works, saying, "Through my exploration, I realized how important Aamako was to Yanase’s work. There is this brightness I feel from Aamako as I engage with Yanase’s creations. It truly brings forth joy and perspective on living." This emotional undertone reflects their collective experiences through hardships and dreams, all culminating to inspire the popular Anpanman character.

One actor casting excitement is Akira Takarada, who is featured as Shinzuke Yatsugi, Iwao's sergeant during military service. "My character supports Iwao, who struggles to find his footing within the military, showcasing the indispensable humanity at the core of the war," Takarada expressed during the pre-talk show event on March 10, 2025. He remarked about how thrilled he feels to contribute to this significant narrative filled with warmth and reflection, shedding light on key discussions about perseverance and kindness during difficult times.

The production manager, Izumi Kurazaki, shared, "Working with Takarada and the skilled cast has been fulfilling, especially having dreamed of this collaboration since my early directing days. This opportunity is something I’ve looked forward to for years." He highlighted Takarada's character, stating, "His relationship with the leads is pivotal as he influences their paths through life, becoming integral to their growth stories. It will be fascinating for viewers to see how this character impacts Noboru and Iwao's journeys."

This hopeful tale is poised to inspire audiences by presenting strong emotions and community support. Kitamura articulated this sentiment well, describing the theme of "unreversible justice"—reflecting on values inherent to living. He stated, "It is about survival, resilience, and connection, which feels exceptionally relevant today." Meanwhile, Imada insisted on the importance of their portrayal, enhancing the warm, shining message of the show.

To thrive within this story, cast members also fondly recalled the moment when the crew received incredible support from the local community during filming near Kochi. Imada shared how pleased she was as local residents showed up bearing treats and encouraging props during the shoot, saying, "It was heartwarming to feel the energy and charm of Kochi; I genuinely aim to encapsulate and share those feelings through my character."

With the series poised to launch and generate excitement, there are plans for fans to immerse themselves with set tickets allowing access to locations significant to both 'Anpan' and previous series. The Kochi Prefecture Tourism Convention Association stated, "Our hope is to guide visitors through the lives of Takashi Yanase and his renowned character Anpanman, encouraging exploration of the local heritage interwoven with the stories told through our beloved characters."
