Animal Rescue Pilot Seuk Kim Dies Tragically In Plane Crash

Virginia pilot devoted years to rescuing shelter dogs across the country leaving behind two survivors from his final flight

Tragedy struck the animal rescue community recently when Seuk Kim, a devoted pilot known for his relentless commitment to rescuing shelter dogs, died in a plane crash in the picturesque Catskill Mountains of southeastern New York. On November 24, as Kim was transporting three dogs from high euthanasia shelters in Maryland to safety at an animal rescue facility, his flight took a devastating turn. While one of the dogs perished, the two others survived, marking both the end of his life and the continuation of his mission to save animals.

Friends, family, and fellow rescuers alike described the 49-year-old Kim as a compassionate figure, whose life was defined by his dedication to animal welfare. His daughter, Leah Kim, poignantly shared, "His legacy is for people to live their lives with joy," demonstrating the impact he had not just on animals but on those around him. Leah vividly recalled how during their last rescue mission, her father couldn’t contain his happiness as he frequently turned to look at the dogs, beaming with joy. "I don’t think I’ve ever seen him smile so much," she remarked.

The crash occurred shortly before 6:05 p.m., just 35 minutes from their destination of Albany, New York. Poor visibility and turbulent conditions prompted Kim to request to change altitude minutes before the accident. When responders arrived at the crash site, they found his plane, identified as a Mooney M20J, had gone down in deep woods, claiming the life of Kim and one of the dogs, named Lisa.

Two other dogs, Whiskey, and Pluto, experienced injuries but survived. Whiskey, the younger of the two, sustained two broken legs and was scheduled for surgery at a veterinary clinic, whereas Pluto came away with bruises and was later released. "Transporters like Seuk are the unsung heroes of the rescue world," said Maggie Pryor, executive director of the Animal Shelter of Schoharie County, emphasizing how Kim had rescued hundreds of animals from shelters where they faced certain euthanasia due to overcrowding.

Kim's commitment to animal rescue began after he obtained his pilot’s license four years ago. His passion took him across the country, flying puppies and other animals to safety, including delivering supplies to hurricane-ravaged areas. He was genuinely viewed as not just a pilot but as someone who brought hope to countless animals waiting for their forever homes.

His work had garnered admiration from many, including his peers such as animal rescuer Cynthia Saracino, who called the incident “a huge loss for our community.” Those who knew him reflected on his larger-than-life spirit and the positive energy he brought to each mission. During missions, Kim would celebrate the animals he was saving, hugging and wishing them luck on their new journeys before parting. Voyages with him were not merely transport—each trip was anchored with love and hope.

Such acts did not go unnoticed; organizations like SFC Virginia paid tribute on social media stating they had seen him just moments before his final flight. “Seuk was upbeat, smiling, and happy; we never once saw him in a bad mood!” they recalled. Many expressed sorrow at the loss of someone who embodied altruism and had built his life around service.

Kim, who immigrated from South Korea and settled in Virginia, was more than just his outward contributions; he was deeply loved by friends and family who cherish the memories of his humor and kindness. His wife, Anna Kang, expressed her heartbreak saying, "He was my lifelong partner, my soulmate, the father of my children. I miss him and his bright personality.” His obituary described him as witty and spontaneous, possessing boundless generosity. It detailed how his laughter could fill rooms and how he made lasting impressions wherever he went.

After the accident, both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the causes of the crash, with authorities emphasizing the importance of learning from such tragedies. Plans are underway to honor Kim’s legacy and contributions to animal rescue within the community he loved.

Despite the devastating outcome, the survival of Whiskey and Pluto stands as a poignant reminder of Kim's mission—to save as many animals as possible and find them loving homes. Friends and the community are determined to continue this work, celebrating Kim’s life through their actions, ensuring he is remembered not just for his tragic end but for the countless lives he touched.

The narrative of Seuk Kim highlights the dedication and spirit of volunteers across the animal rescue community, many of whom give tirelessly to save animals lives. His legacy inspires others to take up the mantle of compassion and service, proving time and time again the power one individual can have on the world around them.

While this loss is felt deeply, the impact of his life reverberates through the many dogs rescued and the countless people influenced by his warm spirit and big heart. Kim's life became one of purpose, and his memory will continue to inspire those who carry forward his mission of kindness and commitment to animal welfare.
