Angelique Kerber Critiques Attitudes Of New Tennis Generation

The former Wimbledon champion expresses her concerns over respect among young players.

Former Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber has recently voiced her concerns about the new generation of tennis players, particularly criticizing their attitudes and level of respect. According to Kerber, the young athletes entering the professional circuit exhibit behaviors markedly different from previous generations.

Speaking during an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Kerber, who recently retired from competitive tennis after her participation in the Summer Olympics, stated, "The generation that's now pushing onto the pro tour really operates completely differently. They have almost no respect left, both in positive and negative senses. It’s a case of ‘eyes shut and charge through’. There’s no looking left or right, just going straight ahead, headfirst.into the wall." This candid assertion reflects her belief this attitude could be detrimental to the sport.

At just 36 years of age, Kerber has transitioned from professional player to consultant, assuming responsibilities with the German Tennis Association (DTB). She is set to support both the elite women's team as they prepare for the Billie Jean King Cup and also mentor younger talents. "I believe one has to show some empathy. But I also think, being older and having more life experience, I have some advice to share with them," she remarked, acknowledging her new dual role as both advisor and advocate for the sport.

Kerber’s transition follows her notable career, where she not only won Wimbledon but also secured three Grand Slam titles and earned Olympic medal recognition. Reflecting on her career, she described her Wimbledon victory as the pinnacle of her achievements, realizing her childhood dream on the iconic grass courts.

Despite her retirement, which she navigated following her Olympics exit, Kerber continues to engage with tennis deeply. "It’s different, very different now. What I totally enjoy is having time, no longer having to travel. What I miss is the competition; that's something I think will always remain," she shared, hinting at the emotional challenges faced during this significant life change.

Kerber’s critique isn’t just personal opinion; it's also reflective of the broader transition happening within tennis as many veteran players step away, making room for new, often younger competitors. With the departures of legends like Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Rafael Nadal from the men's game, the women's circuit is simultaneously witnessing fresh faces rising rapidly.

Yet, this shift brings with it challenges as per Kerber's perspective. The lack of respect she observes extends to various aspects—how young players interact with one another, their attitudes toward the sport, and their professionalism on and off the court. The need for cultivating respect and mentorship, especially from established players, is urgent according to Kerber. Her move to take on a mentoring role signifies her commitment to instilling these values within the next generation.

Looking forward, Kerber hopes her contributions will encourage young players to develop respect for the sport and each other. She emphasizes the importance of learning not just the technical skills required for tennis but also the values and traditions embedded within the game. "It’s imperative to look beyond just winning metrics; there’s so much more to tennis, to sportsmanship," she noted passionately.

Hiring Kerber as part of the DTB reflects not only confidence in her experience but also signals a shift toward nurturing the mental and ethical components of up-and-coming athletes. Emerging talents may benefit greatly from her guidance, becoming more well-rounded competitors who respect the history and future of the sport.

While the changing dynamics of professional tennis can often bring about uncertainty, having voices like Kerber’s advocating for respect and mentorship could lead to healthier competition and camaraderie among players. Her concerns echo throughout the tennis world, urging not just players, but all stakeholders to reflect on the integrity of the sport.

Angelique Kerber is clear about her vision moving forward; she wants to serve as both a mentor and role model for aspiring athletes, guiding them through the often tumultuous waters of professional sports. Her perspective serves as both criticism and encouragement: urging young players to approach their careers with respect and integrity, ensuring the legacy of tennis endures.
