Andy Murray Watches Wimbledon From Home After Retirement

Murray steps back from courtside as Raducanu aims higher and hotel venture faces financial hurdles

Sir Andy Murray, the two-time Wimbledon champion, will not be attending Wimbledon 2025 in person, choosing instead to watch the tournament from home. The 38-year-old Scot, who retired from professional tennis last year, recently told The Guardian that he has no plans to visit the All England Club unless his children express interest in going. Despite his absence on the courts, Murray's presence will still be felt as British hopeful Emma Raducanu aims to follow in his footsteps and improve on her fourth-round finish from last year.

Raducanu, 22, and Murray represent two distinct eras of British tennis, and the pair were set to team up in the mixed doubles event at Wimbledon 2024. However, their partnership was abruptly cut short when Raducanu withdrew due to stiffness in her wrist while performing well in the women's singles. This unexpected withdrawal inadvertently ended Murray's Wimbledon career in a rather anticlimactic fashion. Murray’s mother and former coach, Judy Murray, described the situation as "astonishing" on social media but later clarified that her comment was intended as a joke.

While Murray has largely remained silent regarding the incident, Raducanu has expressed repeated regret and confirmed that she has apologised to him. Speaking at the French Open this year, she said, "I hope he's forgiven me for last year, I still feel bad about it." She also looks forward to reconnecting with Murray, stating, "I think he would give great advice, he's been in a similar situation and would probably understand a lot of things that I'm also going through. But as to anything more, I don't know, that's very far out of thought." At the Australian Open in January 2025, Raducanu reaffirmed her admiration for Murray, describing him as someone she has "grown up looking up to."

The relationship between Raducanu and Murray is further complicated by the fact that Raducanu dismissed Nigel Sears, Murray’s father-in-law and Kim Murray’s father, in the summer of 2021. Despite this, Raducanu has expressed hope that there is "no bad blood" between them following the Wimbledon controversy.

Off the court, Murray's financial standing remains robust. Over his career, he earned approximately £47 million from the ATP Tour, but his wealth has continued to grow since retirement. In May 2025, he was ranked as the 35th wealthiest sportsperson in Britain on the Sunday Times Rich List, with a net worth estimated at £110 million—an increase of £10 million from the previous year. This surge reflects his successful transition into business ventures beyond tennis.

In May 2025, Murray formally entered the business world by becoming an associate partner at Redrice Ventures. His investments include stakes in Game4Padel, a padel court operator, and Seedrs, a crowdfunding platform. Additionally, he holds shares in sportswear giant Castore, which sponsored him toward the end of his career, and sports technology company TMRW Sports, among others.

Murray's financial empire extends to his wife, Kim, who plays a significant role in their joint ventures. In December 2022, the couple purchased the Cromlix Hotel, located in Dunblane, for £1.8 million. The hotel holds sentimental value for them, as they celebrated their wedding reception there around 2015. The 10-bedroom, 34-acre estate features five suites, a one-bedroom lodge, its own private chapel, tennis and pickleball courts, and an award-winning eatery.

Despite charging between £350 and £950 per night and having won the AA Hotel of the Year award for Scotland, Cromlix reported a loss of £369,045 for the financial year ending March 2024, according to CityAM. However, this figure marked an improvement from the previous year's losses, suggesting progress in the venture's financial health. Kim Murray has been hailed as the "creative force" behind the hotel's renovation and marketing efforts, despite having no formal education in the hospitality industry.

In an interview with Country Living magazine, Kim explained their motivation for investing in the hotel: "We'd finished having children and we'd finished building our house, so it seemed the perfect time. Having little kids has been all-consuming. Renovating the hotel has enabled me to come out of motherhood and create something different. I think of it as a family project. Maybe in 15 years, the kids will be interested in it. I want to see where it takes us."

As Wimbledon 2025 unfolds, Murray’s decision to watch from home marks the end of an era, but his influence remains strong through his protégé Raducanu and his expanding business ventures. While the Cromlix Hotel has yet to turn a profit, the Murrays’ commitment to the project reflects their long-term vision and dedication to building a legacy beyond the tennis courts.
