Andhra Pradesh Launches WhatsApp Governance And Drone City

The state embraces technology to streamline public services and develop drone innovation.

Andhra Pradesh is stepping boldly forward with two major technological initiatives aimed at modernizing governance and infrastructure within the state. On Thursday, the state government introduced WhatsApp Governance, providing citizens with access to 161 different services through a simple messaging platform. This innovative approach was officially launched by the Minister for Information Technology and Human Resources Development, Nara Lokesh.

The WhatsApp Governance initiative allows citizens to connect with various government departments without the need to physically visit offices. By communicating through the verified WhatsApp number 9552300009, residents can easily submit applications for services like OBC, EWS, income, and other certificates. Initially, this system will cover departments including Endowments, Energy, APSRTC, Revenue, Anna Canteen, CMRF, and Municipal Administration, with plans to expand its offerings soon.

What makes this program particularly compelling is its capability for mass communication. The government can transmit important information to up to one crore people simultaneously. Citizens can receive alerts about severe weather conditions, electrical repairs, public health services, and other emergencies, which could significantly improve community safety and awareness.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu emphasized the transformative nature of this initiative, declaring it as a significant shift toward paperless, hassle-free public services. 'This would eliminate the need for citizens to visit government offices,' he noted, enhancing efficiency and accessibility for the people of Andhra Pradesh.

The new service will also allow citizens to voice their issues. They can send complaints or petitions directly via WhatsApp and receive quick reference numbers for tracking their requests, which signifies a major step toward more responsive governance.

Alongside this digital initiative, Andhra Pradesh is eyeing the skies with another groundbreaking development. Garuda Aerospace, based out of Chennai, has committed ₹100 crore to establish the state's first 'Drone City.' This significant investment was revealed during a meeting with the Minister of Civil Aviation, Rama Mohan Naidu.

The vision behind this project is to transform Andhra Pradesh not only as a leader for drone technology within India but also to position it as a global hub for innovation and development in the aerial technology sector. Agnishwar Jayaprakash, the founder and CEO of Garuda Aerospace, stated, 'This investment signifies our unwavering commitment to revolutionising the drone industry in India and globally.'

The establishment of the Drone City aims to facilitate drone research and development, empowering startups and innovators to create solutions for pressing societal challenges. Jayaprakash added, 'This investment aligns with our vision of pursuing an IPO and continuing to develop innovative drone solutions.'

The recent initiatives reflect Andhra Pradesh government’s commitment to leverage technology for enhancing public service delivery and facilitating economic growth. The government signed an agreement with Meta on October 22, 2024, to kickstart its digital governance vision, which is part of broader efforts to position the state at the forefront of technological innovation.

Both developments - the WhatsApp Governance and the Drone City initiative - symbolize Andhra Pradesh's proactive stance on meeting the needs of its citizens through technological advancements. They also showcase the state’s ambition to create sustainable solutions and improve infrastructures, setting the stage for smarter governance and economic competitiveness.

Moving forward, these initiatives will require careful implementation and continuous attention to cybersecurity, particularly as they involve the handling of personal data. Chief Minister Naidu has stressed the importance of fortifying computational security measures to guard against potential data breaches.

These steps are part of Andhra Pradesh’s broader vision to transform itself via technology, ensuring citizens can access services efficiently. The government’s readiness to embrace such innovative approaches could serve as a benchmark for other Indian states, inviting them to adopt similar developments to cater to their populations’ needs.

With WhatsApp Governance already operational and the framework for the Drone City rolling out, it’s clear Andhra Pradesh is on a path toward being recognized as a leader not only within the nation but across the globe for technology-driven governance and infrastructure development.
