Ancient Baby Mammoth Yana Unveiled As Climate Change Thaws Siberia

Researchers present the best-preserved mammoth ever found, shedding light on its life and environment.

A remarkable discovery has emerged from the melting permafrost of Siberia as researchers unveiled the remains of a baby mammoth, estimated to be 50,000 years old. Dubbed Yana, this female mammoth is thought to be the best-preserved mammoth body ever found, drawing significant interest from both the public and the scientific community.

According to reports, Yana weighs over 220 pounds and stands about 47 inches tall. Researchers believe she succumbed to death at the tender age of one year. The baby mammoth's remains are among only seven mammoth carcasses recovered globally, making this find particularly noteworthy. Yana was discovered at the Batagaika crater, located deep within the far-eastern region of Yakutia. "This find allows scientists to conduct tests aimed at extracting details about the mammoth’s life, its habitat, and the environmental conditions prevalent during the time it lived," he noted. The situation at the Batagaika crater is not very different from other instances where thawing permafrost has revealed ancient specimens. Over recent years, this region has yielded notable finds, including the remains of extinct species like the saber-toothed cat cub and ancient wolves. This highlights not just the wealth of fossil discoveries available but also the pressing urgency brought about by global warming.
