ANC Faces Internal Turmoil Over Coalition Governance

Discontent grows within the ANC as coalition challenges and financial debts surface following recent elections

The African National Congress (ANC), South Africa's ruling party, is facing mounting internal challenges amid its governance strategy known as the Government of National Unity (GNU). Recently, reports surfaced indicating discontent from party members over coalition partnerships established following the May elections. This dissent has raised questions about the party's cohesion and future stability.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has been spearheading the party's initiatives, is set to address these concerns at a public meeting. The announcement came as the ANC navigates the complex dynamics of being part of a 10-party coalition, which many within the party view as a temporary solution. This coalition approach follows the realization by the ANC of its weakened mandate after failing to secure sufficient majority support during the elections.

According to Fikile Mbalula, ANC's Secretary-General, the party's perception of the GNU is one of temporary alignment rather than permanent arrangement. This statement reflects the underlying tension as many ANC members express skepticism about the effectiveness of their coalition partners and question how these relationships impact the party's long-standing principles.

This internal strife is not just limited to ideological disagreements; it is compounded by financial issues as well. Recently, the ANC faced legal action from Shereno Printers, which is pursuing R4.5 million for unpaid invoices related to election campaign materials. Despite the necessity of these materials during their campaign processes across all nine provinces, the ANC’s failure to settle this debt has left many within the party worried about its financial governance.

Money has often been the Achilles’ heel for the ANC. Earlier this year, the party also attracted attention after ActionSA requested investigations related to the settlement of R102 million owed to Ezulweni Investments. These financial troubles for the ANC aren’t new; they have been echoed by former legal practitioners who accused the party of neglecting payment for services stretching back over ten years, summing up to over R300,000.

Criticism around financial mismanagement aligns with worries about the ANC's operational capability. Members of the party have been vocal about their needs for increased support and financial resources, casting doubts on the ANC's strategy moving forward.

Some party members allege they have faced difficulty communicating with senior ANC leaders, often being met with unreturned calls or ignored emails particularly surrounding the payment issues. A source from Shereno Printers remarked, "The company met with various election campaign leaders and we agreed on payment terms, but currently, it has become difficult for them to answer their emails or return calls." This mode of operations appears to disregard proper financial accountability among its members.

Adding complexity to the situation is the broader economic backdrop within South Africa, characterized by high unemployment rates and public dissatisfaction with service delivery. The ANC has historically relied on garnering support from communities through direct engagement and local leadership; hence this wave of discontent poses significant risk as it could catalyze larger movements within disgruntled constituencies.

While Ramaphosa strives to project unity and focus on the challenges presented by coalitional governance, factions within the ANC are speculated to have other priorities, seeking to resolve internal issues before focusing on broader national problems. Observers view the recent developments as symptomatic of larger systemic challenges faced by the ANC as it grapples with preventing dissent from flowering beyond curable disputes.

Against the backdrop of these controversies, Ramaphosa’s role becomes increasingly pivotal. Addressing the party's loyal base and reaffirming the ANC's commitment to its founding values and new governance routes is expected to be at the forefront of his forthcoming address. The meeting aims to realign party members and quell discontent within ranks, reiterate support for cooperative governance and perhaps set clearer future directives.

The ANC now finds itself at a crossroads where both its financial stability and coherent internal strategy are being challenged as they engage with their new coalition partners. At stake is the ANC's legacy, which is currently jeopardized by accusations of financial neglect and internal fragmentation. Only time will tell whether Ramaphosa can effectively steer his party through this turmoil and establish clearer lines of support and cooperation within the Government of National Unity.
