The comedian reveals how social media criticism led her to seek help for her health condition.

Amy Schumer Recalls Internet Trolling That Led to Cushing's Syndrome Diagnosis

After facing comments about her appearance, Schumer opened up about her health struggles and the importance of self-advocacy.

Actress and comedian Amy Schumer recently shared her health struggles stemming from internet trolls who criticized her appearance, leading to the diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome. During her candid discussion on Alex Cooper's popular podcast, Call Her Daddy, Schumer explained how the online backlash became the catalyst for seeking medical help.

"I was getting these steroid injections [for scars], and it gave me this thing called Cushing’s syndrome, which I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard," expressed Schumer during the episode aired on January 22, 2024. Her revelations highlight the detrimental impact online criticism can have on individuals, particularly those in the public eye.

About a year prior to her podcast appearance, Schumer began encountering comments on social media referencing her noticeably swollen face, often termed "moon face," which is one of the hallmark symptoms of Cushing's syndrome. At first, the comedian thought little of the remarks, dismissing them as typical internet trolling. Yet it was only when medical professionals chimed in with similar concerns, urging her to investigate the matter, did she start to take the comments seriously.

"Doctors were chiming in the comments, and they were like, 'No, no... something's really up - like, your face looks so crazy,'" Schumer said, recalling the moment when her health began to demand attention.

Cushing’s syndrome develops when the body produces excessive amounts of cortisol, often due to prolonged medical treatment with steroids. Emma Cooper, CEO of The Pituitary Foundation, elaborates on the syndrome's effects: "Cushing’s develops when the body produces too much of a hormone called cortisol. Your face tends to be rounder and redder than normal (a classic symptom of Cushing’s known as ‘moon face’), and you may have developed acne.” The holistic health consequences encompass weight fluctuations, muscle weakness, and even mood swings, making it imperative for those affected to pursue medical advice.

Despite initial apprehension and emotional turmoil stemming from her diagnosis, Schumer is now focusing on recovery and self-acceptance. Recently, she embraced her natural beauty by posting unfiltered selfies on her Instagram, rejoicing at her real, unfiltered self. "No filter, no filters," she wrote over one candid picture, conveying her newfound confidence and self-love.

Following her diagnosis, Schumer has spoken to the importance of women advocating for their health, especially when faced with societal pressures about appearances. "The shaming and criticism of our ever-changing bodies is something I have dealt with and witnessed for a long time, and I want so much for women to love themselves and be relentless when fighting for their own health," said Schumer during her commentary on societal expectations.

Around the time of her diagnosis, Schumer was also gearing up to film her new Netflix project, Kinda Pregnant, which was released shortly thereafter. Expressing the exasperation of being both under intense public scrutiny and managing her health, she remarked about the vulnerability she felt surrounding her appearance. The pressure of performing under such conditions undoubtedly took its toll on her self-esteem.

Despite the odds, she reflected on the support she received during this trying time. “Director Lorraine Caffery really amp[ed] me up,” she praised, noting how reassurances from her colleagues helped bolster her confidence. Others, including fellow actors, echoed similar support, with Cheyenne Jackson commenting on her glow, saying, "Happy for you. You also look great."

The reaction to Schumer’s honesty has sparked discussions not only about health but also about how women are treated and judged based on appearances. With the prevalence of social media, the tendency to criticize and police bodies often becomes magnified, putting stars like Schumer under the microscope.

Reflecting on her experience, Schumer has transitioned from being victim to being advocate. By openly sharing her story, she encourages others to prioritize their health and stand up against both societal pressures and health misunderstandings. It’s crystal clear her path is more than just about coping with Cushing's syndrome; it’s about reshaping how we view health, beauty, and self-acceptance.
