Amritsar Conducts Mock Drill Amid Heightened Tensions

Authorities urge residents to stay calm and informed during blackout drills following military actions against terror camps.

In a series of precautionary measures following heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, the Amritsar district administration conducted a mock drill on May 7, 2025, urging residents to remain alert and prepared. This exercise was prompted by recent military actions against terrorist targets in Pakistan, specifically following the Pahalgam terror attack that occurred on April 22, 2025.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Amritsar, Sakshi Sahni, announced the details of the mock drill in a video message. "A siren will be heard at 4 pm, which will be for a simulation exercise... This will broadly be a practice drill. The second drill will be carried out at 10:30 pm, wherein another siren will be heard. There will be a blackout at that time. It is requested that everyone keep their lights off at that time... Power will be normally restored shortly after," she stated.

During the drill, residents were requested to turn off their lights and stay indoors during the blackout, which was scheduled to last from 10:30 pm on May 7 to 11 pm. Sahni emphasized the importance of not believing in fake news, warning against misinformation and black marketing practices that had surfaced in the community. "I have also received information that some people are spreading misinformation and indulging in black marketing. I would like to warn all such people of strict action... The district administration will give you all the information and important updates. I urge everyone not to believe in fake news..." she added.

The next day, on May 8, the Amritsar district administration enforced a blackout again in the early hours as a precautionary measure. This second blackout was initiated around 1:30 am, following reports of loud explosions in the city, which caused panic among residents. The administration urged citizens to stay calm and keep their lights off.

“Taking utmost caution, the Amritsar district administration has again started the blackout process. Please stay at home, do not panic, and do not gather outside your houses; keep the outside lights switched off,” the statement from the district public relations officer read.

This precautionary move came after India launched a retaliatory military offensive, known as Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This marked the most significant military action India has taken within Pakistani territory in over five decades. The operation was a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which had raised alarms about national security.

As tensions escalated, the Ministry of Home Affairs ordered nationwide civil defense mock drills to assess security readiness, emphasizing the need for preparedness amid the ongoing conflict with Pakistan. The drill in Amritsar was part of this broader initiative, highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring public safety.

In the aftermath of the military strikes, unverified reports circulated on social media suggesting explosions in Amritsar, further heightening anxiety among residents. The district administration reiterated its call for calm, urging people to remain indoors and avoid gathering in groups.

As the situation continues to evolve, officials are closely monitoring developments along the Line of Control (LoC), where heavy artillery fire from Pakistan was reported following India's military actions. The Indian armed forces have been on high alert, prepared for any retaliatory measures from across the border.

The mock drills and blackouts are not just measures of precaution; they reflect a growing awareness and readiness among local authorities and the public in the face of potential threats. With the increasing frequency of military operations and the associated risks, these drills serve as crucial reminders of the importance of community cooperation and vigilance.

As the region grapples with these challenges, the Amritsar district administration remains committed to keeping residents informed and safe. The emphasis on public awareness and the need for accurate information is paramount, especially in times of uncertainty.

In conclusion, the recent events in Amritsar underscore the delicate balance between national security and public safety. The proactive measures taken by local authorities, including mock drills and blackouts, aim to prepare residents for potential emergencies while fostering a sense of community resilience amidst rising tensions.
