Amit Shah Advocates Biometrics For Identifying Unidentified Bodies

Union Home Minister emphasizes technology's role in modernizing criminal investigations and improving efficiency.

New Delhi - Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called for the urgent implementation of biometrics technology to assist in the identification of unidentified bodies and individuals found without identification. During a review meeting with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Shah stressed the importance of technology throughout the criminal investigation process.

Shah's comments emphasized the adoption of biometrics as part of broader efforts to modernize law enforcement and improve the efficiency of investigations. He urged the establishment of predefined alerts for all cases at various stages from registration to disposal, aimed at benefiting victims and complainants. "Biometrics technology should be adopted to identify unidentified bodies and unidentified found persons," he asserted, highlighting the significant potential of these innovations.

According to official statements, the meeting not only focused on biometrics but also reviewed the implementation of other pivotal technological frameworks, including the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) 2.0 and the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS). This comprehensive approach aims to integrate various facets of the criminal justice system—including police, courts, prosecution, and forensics—under the umbrella of the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) at the national level.

Shah pointed out the necessity of dispatching regular alerts to investigating officers, as well as senior police officials, as these notifications, sent according to predefined timelines, could significantly expedite investigations. He expressed his belief in creating a richly populated data platform to aid investigation officers and other stakeholders within the criminal justice system.

The Home Minister also highlighted the need for active engagement between state police and senior formations to oversee the progress of CCTNS and ICJS implementations. “A team from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the NCRB should visit states and Union territories to promote these technical projects and provide guidance wherever needed,” he stated.

During the meeting, Shah showed appreciation for the NCRB’s current strides toward technical implementation of the new criminal laws alongside NAFIS, indicating positive momentum within law enforcement operations. The emphasis on technology reflects growing recognition of its role not just as an accessory to policing but as a fundamental tool capable of enhancing the very fabric of criminal investigation.

By investing in biometrics and integrated data systems, Shah envisions a future where law enforcement can swiftly identify persons and bodies, promoting justice for victims and offering closure to families waiting for answers. Each technological advancement presents opportunities to reduce delays and increase the accuracy of identification processes, which have historically plagued law enforcement.

Shah's insistence on using technology as the backbone of criminal investigations speaks volumes about the Indian government’s approach to modern policing and the justice system. The call for adopting biometrics, alongside enhanced systems like CCTNS and NAFIS, could promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency across all levels of the system.

These innovations underline India's commitment to tackling crime effectively through modern solutions, setting the stage for future initiatives. With the necessary resources and technology, officers will be equipped to manage cases more effectively and provide timely updates to both victims and the public.
