American Hiker Found Dead During Table Mountain Adventure

Brook Cheuvront, 20, was on internship abroad when she went missing, prompting extensive search efforts

Brook Cheuvront, a 20-year-old American student from North Carolina, has tragically lost her life during what was supposed to be an exciting hiking experience on Table Mountain, South Africa. Cheuvront, who was enrolled at the University of North Carolina, was participating in an internship program when she went missing, sparking immediate concerns and extensive search efforts.

Her disappearance was reported on Saturday, September 21, when friends realized they had lost contact with her. She had embarked on her hiking trip around noon, using a tracking app for safety. Unfortunately, the app ceased updating shortly after she set off, raising alarms among her friends. Attempts to reach her yielded no response, prompting them to contact authorities.

Officials from South African National Parks (SANParks) were notified and sprang to action. Initial search efforts were made by park rangers and wilderness search teams, who combed the area late Saturday but were forced to suspend their search as night fell. The following day, the search resumed with aerial assistance, which proved pivotal. A search aircraft eventually located Cheuvront’s body on the slopes of Devil’s Peak, part of the iconic Table Mountain, later on Sunday afternoon.

According to SANParks’ spokesman, JP Louw, though some details surrounding her death remain unclear, the park has launched an investigation and plans to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause. The park management has cautioned hikers about the dangers of solo hiking, recommending group excursions of at least four for safety.

The Cheuvront family expressed their devastation through social media, particularly her father, Steve Cheuvront, who made a heartfelt plea for the removal of posts searching for his daughter after her body was found. “She was recovered. We are devastated. God help me and us,” he posted. This request highlights the emotional toll such tragedies have on families.

Brook Cheuvront was not just another student; she was recognized as the valedictorian of her high school class. Back home, she was known for her academic prowess, particularly as part of the esteemed Morehead-Cain Scholarship program, which provided her with opportunities to study abroad. Her internship was linked with the University of Cape Town, focusing on important social issues, including gender-based violence and toxic masculinity.

Her community felt the effects of her sudden passing. Avery County High School, where she graduated, made accommodations for students and staff, including the cancellation of sporting events out of respect for her family. Counselors and support personnel were available to help students navigate through their grief during this challenging time.

Brook had spent more than a month immersing herself in South African culture, including jaunts to local eateries, adventures through nature, and participation in various recreational activities. Her social media posts reflected her excitement and nervousness about her time abroad, which had previously featured joyful hikes and experiences embracing the local environment.

Despite the tragic outcome of her trip, Brook Cheuvront had engaged deeply with the community around her, working on projects aimed at shaping young men’s perspectives toward healthier relationships and masculinity. Her commitment to education and social justice is remembered fondly by her mentors and peers at UNC. Todd Boyette, director of the Morehead Planetarium, recalled her enthusiasm and dedication during her time there, stating, "It was very easy for me to say if you come to Carolina you can work at Morehead," inviting other aspiring students to follow her example of inquisitiveness and adventure.

On the day her body was recovered, SANParks also released statements to mitigate growing concerns about safety on Table Mountain—a popular tourist destination. They reported significant drops in crime statistics over recent months, denying claims of increasing instability within the park areas. Their confirmation aimed to balance safety messages and the natural concerns surrounding the incident without inflaming public fear.

While the investigation continues, many reflect on Cheuvront’s legacy—a bright young woman whose enthusiasm for life was cut short, leaving behind many who cherished her spirit and the meaningful work she started. Her story serves as both a poignant reminder and catalyst for dialogue about safety, community, and the brave journeys individuals undertake beyond their familiar borders.
