American Airlines Partners With Unilode For Advanced ULD Management

The collaboration aims to enhance cargo operations and improve asset management through innovative tracking technology.

American Airlines has announced a significant partnership with Unilode Aviation Solutions, marking a new era in the management of Unit Load Devices (ULDs) as the two companies collaborate to enhance cargo operations and improve asset management. The agreement, revealed on March 18, 2025, will officially commence on October 1, 2025, and promises to leverage innovative technologies to modernize American Airlines' operational capabilities.

Under this long-term agreement, Unilode will equip American Airlines’ ULD fleet with advanced Bluetooth® and long-range Lora-enabled tracking technology. This technology will provide enhanced asset visibility, enabling American Airlines to monitor the location and condition of ULDs in real time, thereby streamlining operations significantly. Moreover, Unilode’s digital solutions, including the specially developed eULD app and customer portal, will further bolster the airline’s ability to manage ULD status and optimize cargo movements.

Greg Schwendinger, president of American Airlines Cargo, stated, "American Airlines is committed to investing in innovative solutions that improve operational performance and deliver a seamless experience for our customers. Unilode’s expertise in ULD management and digital tracking technology will play a crucial role in modernizing our operations and ensuring the highest level of reliability and service.” This sentiment underscores the strategic nature of the partnership as both companies seek to respond effectively to the emerging demands of the air cargo sector.

In addition to real-time tracking, Unilode's contract includes comprehensive maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services across its extensive US and global repair network. This enhancement aims to maintain high operational standards and minimize disruptions in ULD availability. To support the partnership effectively, Unilode will also expand its Americas Customer Success team, ensuring dedicated support for American Airlines as they implement these new services.

The Operations Control Center (OCC) in Bangkok will play a pivotal role in coordinating the planning and positioning of ULD assets. This state-of-the-art center will enable Unilode to optimize resource allocation and provide immediate support for operational decision-making, enhancing efficiency across all aspects of ULD management. Unilode, which boasts nearly 200,000 ULDs in its global fleet, is well-positioned to support the needs of American Airlines as they take full advantage of these cutting-edge solutions.

Ross Marino, CEO of Unilode Aviation Solutions, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership: "We are thrilled to partner with American Airlines to support their ULD operations with our innovative solutions. Our digital tracking capabilities and expertise in ULD management will bring significant benefits to American Airlines’ cargo and passenger operations, and we look forward to a successful collaboration for many years to come. We sincerely thank American Airlines for placing their trust in Unilode.”

This collaboration is expected not only to enhance operational efficiency but also to improve the overall service experience for American Airlines’ customers. The ability to track assets in real time and manage them effectively will lead to reduced losses and enhanced service reliability. As the air cargo market continues to evolve rapidly, partnerships like this one signal a pronounced shift towards integrating digital technology within logistics and airline operations.

Moreover, the initiative reflects broader trends in the aviation industry, where airlines are increasingly turning to digital solutions to optimize their operations amid rising demands for efficiency and transparency. Unilode’s established reputation for ULD management complements American Airlines' strategic focus on leveraging technology to improve operational performance.

Mohammed Akhlaq, Chief Commercial Officer at Unilode, echoed the importance of this partnership: "This partnership underscores the strength of our ULD management solutions and the dedication of our team to providing world-class service. We look forward to working closely with American Airlines and contributing to their continued success.” This strategic alignment is anticipated to serve both parties well in navigating the challenging landscape of air cargo logistics.

As American Airlines prepares to implement these innovative solutions in conjunction with Unilode, the expectations are high—not just for operational improvements but for a transformation in how ULDs are managed and monitored across the airline’s vast network. This partnership represents a forward-thinking approach in an industry that increasingly values efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and cutting-edge technology. In this rapidly changing environment, the collaboration between American Airlines and Unilode may well set a new standard for ULD management, demonstrating a commitment to excellence that could resonate across the aviation sector.
