American Airlines Launches Campaign To Fund Cancer Research

Partnership with Stand Up To Cancer invites customers to contribute for significant rewards and awareness

American Airlines and Stand Up To Cancer have kicked off their annual fundraising campaign to raise funds for cancer research. This collaboration aims to engage customers and incentivize donations between August 15 and September 30, 2024.

During this six-week initiative, customers who contribute will receive 25 AAdvantage® bonus miles for every dollar donated, provided the donation is at least $25. AAdvantage® Mastercard® holders will receive 50 bonus miles per dollar for donations ranging between $25 and $10,000.

The new campaign was launched with the help of actress Rosario Dawson, who appears in a compelling public service announcement pushing for awareness and engagement. American Airlines has successfully raised over $20 million for SU2C since their partnership began in 2016.

This year’s campaign features limited-edition amenity kits, created alongside the sustainable fashion brand Raven + Lily, incorporating the bright colors associated with SU2C. The amenity kits will feature skincare products and include QR codes for donating easily.

Each year American Airlines aims to strengthen its ties with the cancer community through various fundraising efforts. This initiative follows the airline's notable campaign from 2019, which allowed donors to honor loved ones by including their names on aircraft wrapped with special SU2C liveries.

Stand Up To Cancer is dedicated to advancing cancer research by uniting experts to speed up the transition of lab discoveries to patient treatments. Their mission emphasizes public engagement and fundraising to support innovative research.

Since its inception, SU2C has mobilized numerous entertainers and public figures to bring awareness to cancer research and its importance. With the backing of these influential figures, SU2C educates the public about cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

On the research side, Weill Cornell Medicine recently received significant grants to support lymphoma research made possible through the National Cancer Institute. This five-year grant, totaling $12.4 million, will explore how genetic changes affect diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).

The investigation, led by Dr. Leandro Cerchietti and Dr. Christopher Flowers, aims to understand the complex relationship between genetic mutations and DLBCL subtypes. By examining how these mutations correlate to lymphomagenesis, they hope to identify potential treatment targets.

DLBCL affects about 40% of patients poorly responding to chemotherapy, often leading to relapses. This underscores the need for more effective treatments through comprehensive research and technological advancements.

Researchers at Weill Cornell will combine their expertise to develop better therapy options, focusing on less aggressive, non-chemotherapy treatments. Plans include reshaping immune cells known as T cells, enhancing their ability to target DLBCL cells effectively.

These funding initiatives will also help patients enroll in groundbreaking clinical trials, widening the scope of innovative cancer therapies. Through collaboration, institutions share resources and knowledge to maximize research outcomes, setting ambitious goals for future treatments.

The recent $1 million donation to Mount Sinai South Nassau enhances cancer research and clinical trials on Long Island considerably. This substantial contribution aims to provide patients access to the latest treatment protocols available.

Dr. Adhi Sharma, President of Mount Sinai South Nassau, emphasizes the impact of this donation on advancing cancer research. Building upon previous contributions from the Betty Ajces Trust, the funds are intended to continue enhancing clinical research and treatment accessibility.

Mount Sinai South Nassau's affiliation with the National Clinical Trial Network also sets it apart as it collaborates with top organizations and clinicians globally. This affiliation signifies the dedication to improving cancer treatment methods and patient care through research initiatives.

Alan E. Weiner, CPA, JD, Trustee of the Betty Ajces Trust, highlighted the commitment demonstrated by Mount Sinai South Nassau to advance both research and clinical capacities for cancer treatment. This collaborative spirit among institutions is seen as pivotal for making impactful progress.

On the national level, efforts to address cancer funding and initiatives showcase a collective drive toward improving patient outcomes. Collaborations like SU2C and American Airlines not only boost financial support but raise critical awareness within the community.

Through their innovative marketing strategies and community engagement, organizations continue to galvanize support for cancer research. The hope is to sustain momentum to reduce cancer’s impact and improve survival rates.

American Airlines’ partnership with SU2C exemplifies corporate social responsibility, reinforcing their commitment to giving back to the communities they serve. It articulates the airline's mission of caring for people on life’s journeys, showing they stand genuinely alongside their passengers.

With such partnerships flourishing, the outlook for accelerated cancer research and enhanced treatment options seems promising. The newest initiatives mark yet another step forward for the critical cause of cancer research funding amid the supportive environment generated by heightened awareness and action.

The collaboration approaches the challenge of cancer with creativity and purpose, ensuring funds are directed where they matter most. With diverse fundraising methods and unwavering support, the community remains united against cancer.
