Amazon To Retire Chime Service By 2026

Company shifts to Zoom as its primary video conferencing solution following Chime's limited adoption.

Amazon has made the significant decision to retire its Chime service, officially announcing the end of support for the video conferencing platform set for February 20, 2026. This marks a new chapter for the tech giant, which has been grappling with Chime’s limited use beyond its own employee base.

Amazon employees have utilized Chime as their preferred platform for video calls, chat, and business communication. The announcement, reported by AWS (Amazon Web Services), sparked discussions within the company and among industry observers.

“After careful consideration, we have decided to end support for the Amazon Chime service, including business calling features,” noted AWS in a blog post. The memo detailing this change reassured employees by stating, “Zoom is replacing Amazon Chime as the standard meeting application for Amazon internal meetings,” signifying Amazon’s shift toward industry-standard tools.

This transition from Chime to Zoom not only reflects changes within Amazon but also indicates the growing demand for seamless communication tools within corporate settings. According to Amazon’s spokesperson, the limited use of Chime outside the organization necessitated this move. “When we decide to retire a service or feature, it is typically because we’ve introduced somethingbetter or our partners offer a solution...,” they elaborated.

Amazon’s decision arrives amid broader strategic shifts within the company, signaling the growing influences of competing platforms. The tech giant is simultaneously rolling out Microsoft 365 applications across its workforce, which includes popular tools like Outlook, Word, and Excel, alongside Microsoft Teams and OneDrive, providing employees with integrated tools to augment productivity.

Interestingly, this decision does not impact the Chime SDK. This means customers who utilize the communications features within their own applications will not face disruptions as Amazon pivots away from its meeting platform.

The choice of Zoom as the standard for Amazon's internal meetings can also be seen as part of the broader competitive dynamics within the tech industry. Zoom benefits from its strong partnership with Amazon, having utilized Amazon Web Services for hosting several key aspects of its business. This corporate relationship likely influenced Amazon’s choice to adopt Zoom over Microsoft Teams, which remains as its rival due to the latter’s cloud services competing with Amazon Web Services.

Amazon Chime, which first launched publicly in February 2017, was built on the foundation of Amazon's acquisition of Biba, focusing on business communication features. Despite its initial promise, industry observers have noted Chime often lagged behind competitors, lacking some of the advanced features users have come to expect from modern virtual meeting tools.

The shortcomings of Chime became evident as users struggled with its interface. The platform required new attendees to navigate complex settings for audio and video, often resulting in confusion and prompting frequent apologies from meeting hosts. These hurdles may have contributed to its limited success outside the Amazon ecosystem.

The retirement of Chime came alongside another significant move from Amazon, as it announced the cessation of its Inspire service—a short-form video platform echoing TikTok’s popular format. This growing trend signals Amazon’s agile approach to adapt its services amid changing consumer preferences and market demands.

Despite these shifts, AWS reported significant revenue growth, marking a 19 percent increase to $28.79 billion for the first quarter. Still, analysts noted this figure fell short of previous forecasts, reflecting the volatile nature of the tech industry. The weakness in cloud numbers also echoed trends seen among smaller competitors like Microsoft and Google.

Looking forward, Amazon’s decision to retire Chime and lean toward Zoom, coupled with its broader integration of Microsoft 365 applications, suggests it is honing its focus on providing more effective tools for collaboration internally. The evolution of communication technology continues to reshape how companies operate, with Amazon clearly aligning itself with established players like Zoom and Microsoft as it moves away from less effective solutions.
