Amazon MGM Moves Forward With New James Bond Film

Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman start work on the next installment of the iconic franchise in London.

On April 3, 2025, Amazon MGM announced significant progress in the production of the next James Bond film, marking a new chapter for the iconic franchise. During a presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Courtenay Valenti, head of Film, Streaming and Theatrical, alongside global marketing chief Sue Kroll, revealed that producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are already in London working on the eagerly awaited installment.

Valenti described Pascal and Heyman as "filmmaking legends," expressing confidence in their ability to honor the legacy of James Bond while introducing a fresh and exhilarating narrative for audiences worldwide. "We are committed to honoring the legacy of this iconic character while bringing a fresh, exotic new chapter to audiences around the world alongside Amy and David," Valenti stated, acknowledging the duo's absence from the event while thanking them for their anticipated contributions.

This announcement comes on the heels of a pivotal deal made in February 2025, when Amazon MGM secured full creative control of the Bond franchise from longtime producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Although Wilson and Broccoli remain co-owners, the business decision empowers Amazon to steer the future of Bond films. The company initially acquired MGM for $8.5 billion in 2022, and subsequently paid an additional $1 billion to gain creative control over the beloved spy series.

As part of this arrangement, Amazon and the producers established a joint venture to manage the Bond intellectual property rights. The studio is also ramping up its theatrical slate, planning to release 16 films by 2027, indicating a robust future for the franchise.

Since Daniel Craig's final performance as Bond in 2021's "No Time to Die," speculation regarding the next actor to don the iconic tuxedo has been rampant. The hunt for a new Bond has sparked considerable debate, with various names surfacing in the media. According to reports from The Sun, the next film aims to cast the youngest actor ever in the role, potentially setting the story in the 1950s and 1960s. Insiders suggest that the production team is looking for an actor in their twenties, which would represent a significant departure from the more mature portrayals of Craig.

As the franchise moves forward, the challenge lies in addressing Craig's dramatic exit from the series, which left fans with lingering questions. An insider told The Sun, "As sensational as it was, Daniel’s exit caused a headache because the death is still fresh in the minds of fans. They can’t just pretend it didn't happen. So they're now looking at his story as a younger man in a different era.” This creative direction is expected to provide a fresh perspective on the character while maintaining continuity with the existing narrative.

Among the names being considered to replace Craig are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is 34, Harris Dickinson at 28, and James Norton, aged 39. However, Taylor-Johnson has recently distanced himself from speculation about his involvement, leaving fans and industry insiders guessing about who will ultimately take on the role.

The anticipation surrounding the new Bond film is palpable, especially as it could potentially break the record for the longest gap between installments. Currently, the record stands at six years and four months, which was the wait between 1989’s "License to Kill" and 1995’s "GoldenEye." With this new direction under Amazon's stewardship, fans are hopeful for a revitalized Bond that respects its roots while exploring new narratives.

As the production gears up, the excitement surrounding the next chapter of James Bond continues to build. The partnership between Amazon and the storied producers promises to bring a fresh vision to a franchise that has captivated audiences for decades. Fans are eager to see how this new era unfolds, with the hope that it will honor the legacy of James Bond while appealing to a new generation of viewers.

Overall, the future of the Bond franchise appears bright under Amazon's leadership. With experienced producers at the helm and a commitment to innovation, the next 007 installment is set to offer a unique blend of nostalgia and modern storytelling. As the world waits for more updates, one thing is certain: James Bond will continue to be a cinematic icon.
