Amazon Launches Drone Delivery Trials In UK And Italy

The company seeks to transform e-commerce with innovations for airspace integration promising rapid deliveries.

Amazon is ready to take to the skies with its Prime Air drone delivery service, having recently secured permission from the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to operate beyond the line of sight of drone operators. This groundbreaking move also includes plans for similar trials within Italian airspace.

The company previously announced its ambition to launch drone deliveries in both Italy and the UK by late 2024. It joins five other organizations granted the green light for testing, focusing on the challenges of safely integrating drones within airspace used by traditional aircraft.

Under the new guidance, Amazon's drones will be allowed to travel distances of about 12 kilometers from fulfillment centers, opening up new possibilities for rapid deliveries. This push aims to evaluate not only how drones navigate but also how they communicate their presence to other aircraft and air traffic control.

Among the testing sites, Kirkwall Airport located on the Orkney Islands has been earmarked as one of the significant locations for this experimentation. Frederic Laugere, the head of Innovation Advisory Services at CAA, highlighted the necessity of such projects for gathering insights and experiences pivotal for safe daily drone operations.

Laugere emphasized, "Exploring how drones can safely fit within UK airspace is critical," recognizing the need for innovation as the industry evolves. He believes these trials will serve to inform future drone airspace rules and procedures.

Over in Italy, Pierluigi Di Palma, president of the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), expressed enthusiasm for Amazon's initiative, stating, "The future has arrived in Italy." He noted the importance of fostering innovative air mobility and creating conducive conditions for advanced drone services.

Di Palma’s sentiments were echoed by ENAV's CEO, Pasqualino Monti. He reiterated the organization’s commitment to managing airspace as infrastructure for economical growth, reinforcing their strategic partnership with Amazon for drone delivery projects.

Amazon envisions drones outfitted with systems capable of transporting packages weighing up to five pounds. After loading small items at fulfillment centers, the drones will deliver them, landing typically within consumers' gardens—and even ejecting the packages from the air.

The company has developed advanced technology aimed at ensuring safety during drone flights, critical for broad consumer acceptance. Their ‘sophisticated’ sense-and-avoid system allows drones to navigate around static and dynamic obstacles, enhancing overall delivery safety.

It is expected this innovative service will not incur extra charges for consumers, as it will complement Amazon's standard delivery options. The Prime Air program is already operational and making waves both in Lockeford, California, and College Station, Texas, with claims of delivering packages within one hour from the order being placed.

Despite its forward momentum, Amazon has faced challenges along the way. Regulatory hurdles and leadership turnover have contributed to delays, raising questions about the future pace of its rollout.

Back when project trials commenced back in 2016, Amazon successfully delivered items like streaming sticks via completely autonomous drone flights. At the time, deliveries were restricted to packages no heavier than 2.6 kilograms, and recipients had to meet certain conditions to qualify, such as proximity to delivery depots.

Following these initial successes, Amazon significantly reduced its operational drone scope within the UK during 2020 and 2021. Reports indicate this adjustment was largely due to workforce changes and uncertainty about the future of drone delivery.

Other retailers, including Walmart, have already explored drone delivery options. Collaborations with services such as Zipline suggest fierce competition on the horizon for Amazon’s Prime Air.

With promises of safety and efficiency, all eyes are on Amazon as they navigate the road—or should it say the sky?—to revolutionizing deliveries through drone technology.
