Amanda Seyfried Reveals She Turned Down Gamora Role In MCU

The actress shares her thoughts on careers and the Marvel franchise's impact on her choices.

Amanda Seyfried, the acclaimed actress known for her work in films such as Mamma Mia!, Mean Girls, and Mank, has made headlines for revealing her surprising decision to turn down a significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During a recent episode of the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, Seyfried disclosed that she was offered the coveted part of Gamora in James Gunn's 2014 superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy, but ultimately decided to decline the offer.

At the time, Seyfried had doubts about the film's potential success. “Being a part of the first Marvel movie that bombs ain’t good for your career,” she stated, reflecting on her reservations. “I thought that because this was about a talking tree and a talking raccoon that it was gonna be Marvel’s first bomb and that Chris Pratt and I would never work again. I was wrong,” she admitted, considering the film's astounding success at the box office, which exceeded $773 million.

The conversation highlighted her feelings towards taking such a significant role and the pressures that came with it. “I was really scared of the idea of being stuck and painted a different color. It was a giant opportunity. I had just met James [Gunn] in person. He is wonderful,” Seyfried said, emphasizing that she mulled over the offer for days. However, there were several factors influencing her decision. “I didn’t want to suffer for the work,” she expressed, noting her apprehensions about extensive makeup and the demanding schedule.

Seyfried’s reluctance to commit to the role also stemmed from her desire not to live in London for six months out of the year. Instead, she opted to star in Seth MacFarlane's Western comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West, which she felt was more aligned with her career aspirations at the time. "There was another movie that I really wanted to do with Seth MacFarlane called A Million Ways to Die in the West. It felt like a really good opportunity," she explained.

Despite the massive success of Guardians of the Galaxy, Seyfried stands by her choice. She further stated, “I had done some green screen stuff and it wasn’t my cup of tea. I don’t regret anything. I made that decision for myself. It was good for me then, and it's good for me now.” While Saldaña went on to deliver a memorable performance that solidified Gamora as a beloved character within the Marvel Universe, Seyfried believes she made the right choice for her own career path.

Her appreciation for Gunn and the franchise remained clear, as she declared, “James Gunn is a genius and he’s fun and he’s a wonderful filmmaker, and he can actually make anything work.” Seyfried acknowledged that while the franchise flourished, she is content with the road she chose. “I also think that Zoe [Saldaña] and Chris and everybody who’s a part of that movie are having the best time and it worked for them,” she said.

This excitement over the character has not waned. Zoe Saldaña has continued to play Gamora across several sequels, reprising her role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and the latest installment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Most recently, Saldaña expressed her hopes that Gamora may return in another multiverse adventure. She has encouraged diversity in casting, stating, “I hope a woman of color or a woman with special needs can take on the role next. That would be incredible.”

Amanda Seyfried’s journey illustrates the complex decision-making process that many actors face, especially when navigating the high stakes of superhero franchises. With a successful career spanning various genres, Seyfried has clearly established her brand in Hollywood, staying true to her gut instincts. Whether reflecting on past opportunities or looking ahead, her narrative is a compelling one of self-determination in the ever-evolving landscape of film.
