Altrincham Storms Past Barnet 3-1 In FA Trophy

Tom Crawford scores twice to lead Altrincham to victory at J.Davidson Stadium.

On a chilly afternoon at the J.Davidson Stadium, Altrincham Football Club stunned Barnet FC with a resounding 3-1 victory, defying the odds after trailing at halftime during the Isuzu FA Trophy match on January 7, 2025. Tom Crawford emerged as the hero of the day, netting twice to help propel his team through to the next round.

The match started with Barnet displaying their attacking prowess, warming to their task first and making their mark early. Rhys Browne scored for the Bees just 16 minutes in, taking advantage of some defensive lapses from Altrincham. The visitors had appeared poised and confident, carving out early opportunities before Browne's moment of fortune. Following what seemed like a foul on Elliot Osborne, the referee allowed play to continue, leading to Browne reacting quickly to poke the ball over the line.

Despite going behind, Altrincham demonstrated the resilience expected from them at home. The Robins fought to create opportunities as they began to regain control of the match. Key players like Regan Linney showcased their skills, nearly leveling the score with chances, but their efforts were thwarted by Barnet's defense and goalkeeper Owen Evans.

At halftime, Barnet led 1-0, but the start of the second half brought renewed hope for Altrincham supporters. Just six minutes after the break, Crawford equalized with an expertly finished goal. Receiving a well-timed cross from Alex Newby, Crawford struck with precision, sending the ball past Evans and igniting the crowd.

The impeccable timing of Crawford's goal seemed to galvanize the Robins, who were relentless in their pursuit of victory. Just as the clock ticked to 69 minutes, Crawford scored his second. Barnet struggled to clear their lines, and when Evans’s attempt to punch the ball away fell short, Crawford seized the opportunity and volleyed the ball over the keeper's head.

With the game shifting dramatically, Barnet found themselves on the back foot, and Altrincham wasn’t finished yet. With only five minutes remaining, substitute Joe Nuttall secured the win with his very first touch of the ball, converting from close range after a lovely assist from Newby, to wrap things up at 3-1.

This victory propelled Altrincham forward to the last 16 of the FA Trophy, fortifying their ambitions of reaching Wembley. With 1,233 spectators present, including 96 Barnet fans, the atmosphere at J.Davidson Stadium was electric as cheers erupted following each goal from the home side.

Manager Phil Parkinson expressed pride over his squad’s performance post-match, especially highlighting Crawford’s development from signing to playmaker. “Crawford has been one of the successes of the campaign so far... he is going from strength to strength,” he remarked, reflecting the view of many fans who see him as pivotal to the team's future prospects.

The defeat was disappointing for Barnet, who were eager to improve upon their previous performances after drawing their last league match against Eastleigh. Coach Dean Brennan now faces the challenge of regrouping his players, instilling confidence as they prepare to tackle their next fixtures.

Looking forward, Altrincham can relish their recent successes as they gear up for two upcoming Vanarama National League home games against Wealdstone and Maidenhead United. Fans are already buzzing with excitement, especially after seeing their team march forward confidently.

While Barnet will need to address their defensive lapses, both teams will be eager to seize their opportunities as the season progresses. This match not only showcased the thrilling nature of cup football but also spotlighted the promising talents developing within the ranks of Altrincham Football Club.
