With the New Year's Eve and Day forecast promising pleasant weather, families in Altona and Miami have exciting activities lined up to ring in 2025.
Altona's Mayor, Harv Schroeder, has shared some options for residents seeking enjoyment during the holiday season. During his recent "Mayor's Chair" segment, he enthusiastically noted, "If you’re looking for the opportunity to lace up your skates, the ice at the nature pond is now safe to go on." For those preferring indoor activities, he advised checking out the schedule at the Sunflower Gardens Arena, which offers free public skating along with the new 18 & Under Hockey & Skatinг initiative.
Schroeder also pointed out the popularity of the local toboggan hill at the Buffalo Creek Nature Pond, highlighting the community's engagement with these winter activities. "It’s nice to see," he remarked. With Christmas decorations being taken down, he reminded residents about the upcoming Christmas Tree Pickup, scheduled for January 15th. "Please place your tree on the curb before 7am for collection. If you miss the pickup day, you can drop off your tree at the Altona/Rhineland Waste Disposal Site," he instructed.
Turning attention to waste management, the Altona landfill has expanded its services. It now includes paint and light bulb recycling programs, allowing residents to safely dispose of such items at no cost. This initiative aligns with seasonal clean-up efforts and provides residents with eco-friendly options.
Meanwhile, the Miami Community Center has teamed up with the Miami Power Toboggan Club to host their New Year’s Eve social. This event promises not just fun but also fosters community spirit. Scheduled for December 31st, 2024, at 8:00 PM, attendees can enjoy entertainment provided by DJ services from CD Sound, along with exciting social prizes. Tickets are reasonably priced at $15, available at the door, making it accessible for everyone wanting to celebrate together.
"Miami socials are always a blast," stated club representative Russ Suderman. "The community here is amazing—it feels like a second home for us." The evening will feature a hearty late-night lunch served at 10:00 PM, ensuring no one goes hungry during the excitement. This social event doubles as a fundraiser, with proceeds supporting much-needed maintenance and renovations for the community center and aiding the Power Toboggan Club's activities, including upgrading their sound system. "Right now, we’re piecing together speakers from everyone’s garage," Suderman joked. "It works, but it’s time for an upgrade!"
Winter conditions this year have been favorable compared to last, with plenty of snow allowing for outdoor fun. Snowmobile routes and cross-country ski trails are open and ready for use, enticing locals to embrace the winter environment. Suderman encouraged residents to participate, stating, "Come out and join us. It’ll be a great time, and we can’t wait to celebrate the New Year with you!"
Whether it’s ice skating at the nature pond, sledding at Buffalo Creek, or gathering at the community social event, both Altona and Miami offer ample opportunities for families to enjoy the New Year festivities together. Local leaders are focused on strengthening community ties and ensuring everyone has options to celebrate the holiday season safely and joyfully.
