Alternate Plans Revealed For Mace Windu's Death

Daniel Logan explains George Lucas's original vision for Revenge of the Sith and Boba Fett's role.

A fascinating Star Wars story has resurfaced from young Boba Fett actor Daniel Logan, confirming the original fate of Jedi Master Mace Windu in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Early concepts for the film indicate Windu was not always destined to be defeated by Darth Sidious, but instead by his father's son, Boba Fett.

While younger Boba Fett does not appear in the final prequel film, Logan shared intriguing details about how George Lucas originally envisioned this character having a pivotal role. According to Logan, during his appearance at GalaxyCon Richmond, Lucas planned for young Boba Fett to avenge his father, Jango Fett, by killing Windu. “Mace was going to come at Boba like he did with Jango, but because Boba had already experienced beforehand what had happened, I hit the jetpacks, I fly upside down, or on my back. I pull out Jango’s blasters and I shoot him right between the stomach, and that's how Mace Windu was meant to die,” Logan revealed.

This originally storyboarded scene was highlighted by the 2006 publication of Star Wars Insider #85 and discussed in The Making of Revenge of the Sith. Logan recounted with excitement how he anticipated bringing this scene to life, waiting for the call from Lucasfilm. But as it often goes in filmmaking, changes emerged. Samuel L. Jackson, who portrayed Windu, influenced the shift, arguing against Boba’s involvement and expressing concern about being killed by “a punk kid.”

A significant shift occurred as Jackson believed Windu's death should hold greater weight, and it wouldn’t make sense for someone of Boba’s stature to kill such a powerful Jedi. The final narrative saw Windu betrayed by Anakin Skywalker before meeting his end at the hands of Darth Sidious, delivering emotional impact and illustrating Anakin's descent toward darkness.

The concept of young Boba avenging his father's death is compelling for many Star Wars fans. It symbolizes poetic justice—a storyline rooted deeply within the expanded Star Wars universe, echoing the familiar themes of vengeance and the consequences of one's actions. Logically, having the son of Jango Fett deliver the killing blow to the Jedi who took his father's life would create rich storytelling, enhancing the tragic saga of the Fett legacy.

Despite the fact this specific encounter never came to fruition, Boba Fett remained an enduring character within the Star Wars lore, with his quest for vengeance explored through various media, including The Clone Wars animated series. Throughout those episodes, Boba teams up with figures like Aurra Sing to go after Windu, only to face numerous failures.

This narrative arc between Boba and Windu, once thought possible, highlights the intricacies of storytelling decisions made within the Star Wars saga. Just as these characters' fates entwined, the decisions taken by actors and creators can significantly shift the overall narrative experience. Fans are often left pondering the ways characters might have interacted or how plot lines could diverge based on alternate choices.

The tale of Mace Windu’s demise is acknowledged as one of the most pivotal moments within the prequel trilogy, creating lasting impacts on audiences. Coupled with the emotional weight of Anakin’s fall from grace, these decisions contribute tremendously to the series’ depth.

For September 2023, as attention stays focused on both classic characters like Windu and newcomers from the latest entries within the Star Wars franchise, these alternate history insights serve to bolster fans’ appreciation for the expansive universe. Mace Windu, portrayed with resilience and strength by Jackson, will continue to symbolize the Jedi's struggle against the Sith.

Looking back, one can't help but wonder how the narrative might have shifted had directing decisions led to the young bounty hunter's intervention. The notion of what could have been lingers, much like Force spirits guiding characters from beyond, teasing dedicated followers of the saga.

One thing remains certain: the impact of Windu’s fate echoes throughout the Star Wars mythos and will forever endure as one of the great “what could have been” stories within this legendary franchise.
