As spring settles in across the Altai region of Russia, local authorities are on high alert as active snow melting commences. The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, in collaboration with various interacting services, is launching a wide array of preventive measures aimed at ensuring the safety of communities potentially threatened by flooding.
Each year, as the temperature begins to rise, the region experiences water surges that can compromise the normal living conditions of residents. In anticipation of such occurrences, the Ministry of Emergency Situations has mobilized resources to mitigate the risks associated with the melting snow and the accompanying water overflow.
To minimize the negative impacts of flooding, the authorities are engaged in several critical activities. These efforts include sawing and blackening the ice cover on rivers to facilitate drainage, with approximately 3 kilometers of ice cut in the past 24 hours alone. Notably, this work was conducted in the Talmensky and Kamensky districts, showcasing a proactive approach to the regional flood threat.
Moreover, extensive snow removal efforts have been undertaken. So far, around 4,800 cubic meters of snow have been cleared from urban and rural areas, contributing to a cumulative total of approximately 78,000 cubic meters throughout the operational period. These actions are crucial in preventing water accumulation and subsequent flooding.
In addition to snow clearance, key infrastructure maintenance is also underway. At least 7 kilometers of storm drains have been cleaned, adding to a total of 53 kilometers that have been addressed thus far. Furthermore, the laying of drainage canals continues, with 10 kilometers completed and a cumulative total exceeding 37 kilometers. These efforts not only bolster flood defenses but also enhance the overall drainage capability of the region.
As of today, March 19, 2025, the flood situation in the Altai region remains stable, with no reported floods impacting the communities. Officials from the Crisis Management Center of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations are continuously monitoring the situation round the clock. They maintain constant communication with all municipal entities to ensure a coordinated response to any potential threats.
In light of recent developments, 17 operational groups from fire and rescue garrisons have been deployed to monitor sections of rivers deemed to be at risk of blockages or dangerous overflows. Their vigilance plays a key role in safeguarding local communities against possible flooding.
