A-List Stars Shine At Palm Springs Film Festival 2025

Nicole Kidman dedicates award to her late mother as Hollywood kicks off its award season.

Palm Springs, Calif. — The Palm Springs International Film Festival kicked off Hollywood's award season this week, with A-list stars and heartfelt tributes filling the nights. The 36th annual International Film Awards set the tone for what promises to be an exciting two months of accolades and celebrations, culminating with the Golden Globes this Sunday.

Nicole Kidman took center stage on opening night to honor her late mother, who passed away shortly after Kidman began promoting her film "Babygirl" at the Venice Film Festival. "I feel my momma right now. This is for you, momma," Kidman said, visibly emotional as she accepted the International Star Award presented by friend and co-star Jamie Lee Curtis. Kidman expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to pay tribute to her mother, stating, "My whole career has been for my mom and dad."

The festival was not short on star power, featuring appearances from the likes of Angelina Jolie, who received the Desert Palm Achievement Award-Actress from her godmother, Jacqueline Bisset. Jolie's role as opera singer Maria Callas in Netflix's "Maria" has earned her significant buzz, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance. Reflecting on the struggles highlighted in Callas's life, Jolie said, "I’m all right today because when I walk off of this stage, I am more myself because of you, Zahara, and your brothers and sisters." This poignant moment followed her recent divorce settlement with Brad Pitt, adding layers to her emotional address.

Throughout the festival, artists and awardees shared their personal connections to their work. Colman Domingo, honored with the Spotlight Award, reflected on how the arts shaped his life and remarked, "Art saves lives. It saved mine. It will save yours." Domingo's speech highlighted the transformative nature of creativity, tying it to his role in the film "Sing Sing," about incarcerated individuals finding purpose through theater.

Timothée Chalamet also took the stage to receive the Chairman Award, discussing his deep insight about acting. He credited music icon Bob Dylan, saying, "A wise man once said, 'They can hurt your feelings if they boo you, they can also kill you with kindness.'" His forthcoming portrayal of Dylan in "A Complete Unknown" showcased his dedication, having spent over five years preparing for the role.

Fun-loving jests added levity to the evening. Jennifer Coolidge, presenting the Rising Star Award to Ariana Grande, humorously noted Grande was already famous: "Hasn’t Ariana already risen?" Grande responded playfully, thanking her "good friends Botox and Juvederm," moments after almost dropping her award.

During his presentation, Chalamet jokingly noted he had worked more production days with director Denis Villeneuve than Jake Gyllenhaal, alongside his co-presenter Amy Adams, highlighting the director's growth through larger and more ambitious projects.
Kieran Culkin, who received the Breakthrough Award-Actor for his role in "A Real Pain," admitted, "It’s weird to be here, to have been doing this for over 36 years. Perfect time to get my breakthrough award."

The night also celebrated newer talents, such as Mikey Madison, winner of the Breakthrough Award-Actress for her work in Sean Baker’s "Anora." Other standout achievements included Adrien Brody receiving the Desert Palm Achievement Award-Actor and the ensemble cast of "Conclave" winning the Ensemble Performance Award, with director Edward Berger emphasizing the unique performances of each actor.

The festival continues until January 13, 2025, showcasing diverse films and talent and delivering less pressure compared to the more mainstream Golden Globes and Oscars. The event allows stars to experiment with their styles, as noted from last year’s memorable looks, such as Cate Blanchett's jeweled jumpsuit and Danielle Deadwyler’s pink satin gown.

This year promises the same fashion risks and fun, setting the stage for the exciting award season to come. With its blend of heartfelt tributes and lighter moments, the Palm Springs International Film Festival is redefining Hollywood's celebratory atmosphere as it enters another memorable year.
