On March 24, 2025, Algeria initiated discussions with Ethiopia centered around enhancing their cooperation in the oil, gas, and mining sectors. Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, met with Ethiopian Minister of Mines, Habtamu Tegegn, to outline the importance of partnership development that aligns with both countries' goals.
During the meeting, Arkab emphasized the significance of exploring, exploiting, and transforming mineral resources, specifically targeting invaluable assets such as gold and phosphate. He stated, "We are ready to provide technical and training support to the Ethiopian side in exploration," showcasing Algeria's commitment to bolster Ethiopia’s capabilities in the mineral sector.
The discussions also ventured into potential joint investment opportunities within Ethiopia’s oil and gas realm. Areas with promising prospects, such as Ogaden, Metema, and Metema, were brought to the forefront, signifying Algeria's strategic interest in participating more substantially in Ethiopia’s energy landscape.
Arkhab asserted that Algeria has garnered extensive expertise through its seasoned oil company, Sonatrach, which possesses advanced technologies and significant competencies. This expertise, he noted, positions Algeria as a valuable partner for Ethiopia in the development of its energy sector.
Moreover, both ministers discussed the option of supplying Ethiopian markets with Algerian crude oil and petroleum products. The increasing demand for fuel in Ethiopia, amidst its burgeoning economy, underscores the necessity for reliable energy partners like Algeria.
Arkab concluded the meeting by expressing optimism about the collaboration, suggesting that the partnership between Algeria and Ethiopia in both mining and energy sectors could serve as a vital pillar for sustainable development. The affirmation of a strategic vision for technical and scientific cooperation reflects both sides' commitment to harnessing their natural resources responsibly and effectively.
