Alec Baldwin Exonerated From Manslaughter Charges After Hutchins' Death

Prosecutor withdraws appeal, clearing way for civil litigation by Halyna Hutchins' family.

The criminal case against actor Alec Baldwin related to the tragic shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust has officially come to a close, as special prosecutor Kari Morrissey has withdrawn efforts to appeal the dismissal of involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin.

This decision, announced on December 23, 2024, signifies the end of Baldwin’s potential criminal liability stemming from the unfortunate incident, which occurred on October 21, 2021. During a rehearsal, Baldwin discharged what he believed to be a blank round, fatally wounding Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. The case, mired in controversy and complicated by claims of evidence mishandling, has left many, including the family of Hutchins, feeling disillusioned.

Attorney Gloria Allred, representing Hutchins' relatives, expressed outrage and disappointment at the decision. At a press conference, she stated, "There was no justice, because a jury couldn't hear the evidence," emphasizing her belief in Baldwin's culpability. Hutchins' death has sparked intense legal battles, with Allred vowing to pursue civil action against Baldwin and others involved in the Rust production.

Initially, Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter after prosecutors argued he acted recklessly and with criminal negligence by firing the weapon during preparations for the scene. Yet, the tide turned three days after the trial commenced in July 2024, when Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the charges, citing serious flaws and alleged misconduct by the prosecution, which included not presenting significant evidence—a cache of bullets related to the case.

After the judge's ruling, the prosecution's path became murky, leading them to file the appeal. Morrissey stated the appeal was intended to seek justice for Hutchins, but the conditions under which it was pursued drew criticism from legal observers and Baldwin’s defense team, who hailed the dismissal as "final vindication" of their position. Baldwin’s attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, reinforced their standpoint, declaring, "This was an unspeakable tragedy but Alec Baldwin committed no crime. The rule of law remains intact in New Mexico."

Despite the withdrawal of criminal charges, Baldwin's legal struggles are far from over. The family of Hutchins—particularly her parents and sister, who live in Ukraine—plans to proceed with their civil lawsuit against Baldwin, seeking accountability and damages. They believe Baldwin should face repercussions for his actions. Allred expressed their determination, stating, "Clearly, the rights of Alec Baldwin were protected, but the due process rights of the victims have been violated." She reiterated her clients' resolve to hold Baldwin accountable under civil law.

While Baldwin has attempted to move forward professionally, his involvement with the film Rust continues to haunt him due to the tragedy surrounding Hutchins’ death. The production resumed and even premiered at the Camerimage Film Festival in Poland in November 2024. The event honored Hutchins’ contributions to cinema and was attended by several industry figures, including Souza. It was revealed the film's release was part of a settlement with Hutchins’ husband, Matthew, and their son, aimed at providing them with financial support.

The courtroom drama surrounding Baldwin has also exposed significant faults within the New Mexico legal system, particularly concerning the handling of evidentiary procedures. Following the dismissal of Baldwin’s charges, other legal ramifications surfaced, including the acknowledgement of procedural irregularities by the attorney general’s office which influenced their decision to cease pursuing the appeal. A spokesperson for New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez explained, "Our energy needs to be devoted to supporting those cases on appeal. There are other victims’ families waiting for justice."

Despite Baldwin's exoneration from criminal proceedings, the impact of the incident has been long-lasting for Hutchins’ family. Hutchins’ sister, Svetlana Zemko, articulated the sentiments shared by the family, insisting, "Mr. Baldwin must be held accountable. " The fate of Baldwin, who aims to continue his career with upcoming projects—including starring roles created before and after the incident—remains uncertain as he faces accountability both legally and morally for what has transpired.

With the official conclusion of the criminal case, attention shifts entirely to the civil lawsuits, where the family of Halyna Hutchins seeks justice and answers under oath from Baldwin. How this tragic story will evolve remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the shadow of the incident will linger as all parties navigate the aftermath of this harrowing chapter.
