Aldrin Sampear Faces Assault Charges After Road Rage Incident

The Newzroom Afrika anchor's aggressive behavior sparks social media outrage and charges from a university student.

Aldrin Sampear, a prominent news anchor for Newzroom Afrika and former star of the popular show 'The River', has found himself at the center of a social media storm following a road rage incident that allegedly occurred on Thursday, April 17, 2025, in Randburg, Johannesburg. The incident has since resulted in assault charges being filed against him by a 20-year-old university student, Laricia Augusto.

The confrontation reportedly began on Jan Smuts Avenue, where Augusto claims she was driving to her university. According to her account, she had moved into the right lane to avoid a taxi that had abruptly slammed on brakes in front of her. "I was in the left lane, minding my own business, and he was cruising somewhere behind me in the right. Then, as it tends to happen with Joburg traffic, a taxi up ahead slammed on brakes in front of me. So I indicated and moved over into the right lane," she stated. However, she did not anticipate the aggressive response from Sampear.

Augusto alleges that Sampear accelerated and closely followed her bumper, hooting aggressively. "He practically glued himself to my bumper, hooting aggressively. I had no idea what his issue was, but to avoid any drama, I moved back into the left lane to let him pass. That’s when things turned nasty," she recounted. She further claimed that as she returned to the left lane, Sampear swerved into her lane, clipping the right rear side of her car, which nearly caused her to lose control.

As both parties exited their vehicles, Augusto described a heated exchange. "He came out already shouting and gesturing wildly. He was screaming at me. I tried to defend myself, pointing out that what he did was deliberate road rage," she recalled. In the viral video of the altercation, Sampear can be seen accusing Augusto of giving him the middle finger, which she admitted to doing in response to his aggressive driving. "You can see him pointing in my face, shouting nonstop. He pushed me, grabbed me again, and hit me," she claimed, expressing her fear during the confrontation.

Sampear, for his part, has denied the allegations of assault, stating, "I’m horrified to see an edited version of the video because I actually went to my car to go fetch my phone and license to share with the driver. At no point did I assault the driver. We have exchanged details." He added that he reported the incident to the police and that his legal team would handle the situation factually and honestly.

Despite his denials, the Gauteng police confirmed that a case of common assault has been opened against Sampear. Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo stated, "Police can confirm that a case of common assault has been opened, and no arrests have been made yet." The incident has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many South Africans weighing in on the situation.

Comments on social media range widely, with some users expressing sympathy for Sampear, while others criticized his behavior. One user, @tshepom619, remarked, "Aldrin should’ve handled this better. Accidents aren’t about who’s right or wrong. Hopefully, they both find peace for the sake of his reputation." Another user, @yangamessi, noted, "Eish being famous can be a curse sometimes, because if this was an ordinary person, this would never have gone to SAPS." Meanwhile, @MLANDO60870174 argued, "This is what we call GBV. He must be taken off air. He can't attack women like this."

The fallout from this incident is particularly significant given Sampear's past. Five years ago, he admitted in the media to having assaulted women previously, attributing it to being provoked at the time but claiming he had since outgrown that behavior. This history adds a layer of complexity to the current allegations against him.

As the story continues to develop, the public awaits further details regarding the police investigation and any potential legal consequences for Sampear. The incident has not only raised questions about road rage in South Africa but also about the responsibilities of public figures in handling conflicts, both on and off the road.

In a society where road rage incidents have become increasingly common, this case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a minor traffic altercation can escalate into something more serious. With the rise of social media, such incidents are often captured and shared widely, leading to public scrutiny that can affect reputations and careers.

As for Sampear, the coming days will likely be crucial in determining how this situation unfolds. His future as a news anchor may hinge on the outcome of this case and the public's perception of his actions during the incident. The question remains: how will he navigate this storm and what implications will it have for his career?
