Aldi Recalls Baby Potatoes Over Undeclared Milk Allergy Risk

Aldi urgently pulls Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter after milk allergen omission prompts nationwide recall and refund offer

Aldi has issued an urgent recall of its Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter after discovering that the product contains milk, an allergen not declared on the packaging. This oversight poses a serious health risk to consumers with milk allergies or intolerances.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed that certain 385g packs of the baby potatoes, with use-by dates up to and including July 1, 2025, are affected by this labelling error. Customers who have purchased these products are strongly advised not to consume them and instead return them to the store for a full refund.

The recall specifically concerns packs with barcodes 4061463488152 and 4061463488190. Aldi has emphasized that the recall is a precautionary measure to protect consumers and prevent any allergic reactions. The supermarket apologized for the mistake and reassured shoppers that all its products normally undergo rigorous safety and quality checks.

In a statement on its website, Aldi said, "Our supplier is recalling Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter because it contains the allergen milk which is not listed on the packaging. Customers are asked to return this product to their nearest store, where a full refund will be given. We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation."

The FSA issued a national alert on June 24, 2025, urging consumers with allergies or intolerances to milk or milk constituents to avoid the product and to return it for a refund. The agency also informed relevant allergy support organizations to notify their members about the recall.

This is not the first time Aldi has faced issues with this particular product. Earlier in April 2025, the Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter were recalled for similar reasons related to incorrect labelling, underscoring ongoing challenges in ensuring allergen information is accurately communicated to consumers.

The recall comes amid a series of recent food safety alerts in the UK. For instance, Fortune Foods recently recalled Laoganma Black Bean Chilli Sauce, sold in Sainsbury's world foods aisle, after it was found to contain undeclared peanuts—another allergen that can cause fatal reactions. The batch affected was a 280g jar with batch code 18232 and a best before date of March 8, 2026.

Other supermarkets have also had to pull products due to contamination risks. Lidl recalled its own-brand frozen Harvest Basket Hash Browns (750g, batch number 5144L, best before May 24, 2027) over fears of metal fragments, as well as Alesto Raw Fruit and Nut Bars due to potential plastic pieces in various batches.

Health food brand Grape Tree has also issued a recall of its Raw Unsalted Macadamia Nuts (250g, batch code G41 5 101 250610, best before July 11, 2026) after detecting Shiga toxin-producing E.coli in one batch. E.coli infections can cause severe symptoms including diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and fever.

The seriousness of undeclared allergens was tragically highlighted by the death of Jess North, a 20-year-old woman with a severe peanut allergy who died from an anaphylactic reaction after consuming a few mouthfuls of a ready meal in May 2021. Jess's mother, Maxine, has since campaigned to raise awareness about the dangers of food allergies and the importance of accurate labelling and availability of epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens).

Consumer safety experts stress the importance of vigilance when it comes to food labelling and recalls. Product recalls serve as a crucial protective measure, but consumers must also remain alert. If you own a product that has been recalled, manufacturers typically provide instructions for returning or disposing of the item free of charge. Registering appliances or products with manufacturers can help ensure you receive timely notifications about recalls or safety issues.

For those affected by this Aldi recall, customer service can be reached at 0800 042 0800, and more information is available at https://help.aldi.co.uk/s/. Shoppers are urged to check their pantries and return any affected packs to avoid potential health risks.

This latest recall underscores the ongoing challenges retailers face in maintaining strict allergen control and labelling standards, and the critical importance of consumer awareness in preventing allergic reactions.
