Albertsons Companies has officially launched its third annual Innovation Launchpad competition, seeking to discover and promote independent brands within the food, beverage, and pet product sectors. This year, the competition invites brands with net retail sales ranging between $3 million and $10 million to apply, culminating with the live presentations at the Natural Products Expo West set to take place on March 4, 2024, in Anaheim, California.
The call for entries is now open, and applications will be accepted until January 19. A total of 50 applicants will be chosen to showcase their innovative products before a panel of judges. The selection criteria highlight key areas such as functional beverages, hydration options, sober-curious drinks, low-sugar or low-carb products, protein solutions, global flavors, healthy meal preparations, and premium items for pets.
According to Omer Gajial, the Executive Vice President of Merchandising and Chief Digital Officer at Albertsons Cos., the Innovation Launchpad serves as a vibrant platform connecting new and innovative brands with their customers. He remarked, "The Albertsons Innovation Launchpad is an exciting platform... Since the competition began in 2022, we have received an overwhelming response from entrepreneurs eager to showcase their products. We are thrilled to host this competition again as it not only creates opportunities for...emerging brands but also allows us to discover new and innovative products to delight our customers."
Last year, the competition attracted over 700 applicants, resulting in three grand prize winners: WunderEggs, Evergreen, and Blue Zones Kitchen. Each of these brands received prizes totaling over $300,000, including cash and industry services, which facilitate their growth and market entry. WunderEggs, notable for being a plant-based egg alternative, has successfully launched its products across 1,600 Albertsons portfolios, including brands like Safeway, Albertsons, and Shaw's.
Omer Gajial emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating the competition not only aids budding brands but also enriches the products available to consumers, keeping pace with their ever-evolving preferences.
Albertsons operates its stores under various well-known banners, serving communities across 34 states and the District of Columbia.
