Alabama A&M Football Player Medrick Burnett Jr. Alive After Misreported Death

University retracts heartbreaking death announcement , asserts he is stable and recovering

Alabama A&M University has found itself at the center of confusion after mistakenly announcing the death of football player Medrick Burnett Jr. This error occurred just hours before University officials corrected the statement, affirming Burnett is alive and stable, still receiving treatment for injuries sustained during an October game.

Burnett, who is only 20 years old, suffered a serious head injury during the annual Magic City Classic, where Alabama A&M faced Alabama State on October 26. The linebacker reportedly endured severe trauma from what was described as head-on collisions on the field, leading to multiple brain bleeds and swelling, forcing medical professionals to conduct a craniotomy to relieve the pressure.

On Tuesday evening, the athletic department at Alabama A&M made the shattering announcement of Burnett's death, reportedly based on information from one of his immediate family members. This communicated both shock and grief throughout the college football community and among supporters.

"We are heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.," said Alabama A&M’s athletic director, Paul A. Bryant, during the original announcement. After the fallout of the false news, the university was quick to issue communication reaffirming Burnett's current condition—alive and stable at UAB Hospital.

Shortly after the initial report, Alabama A&M released another statement saying, "We retract the news of the passing of Medrick Burnett Jr. That was originally advised by an immediate family member on Tuesday evening. Upon hearing from a representative from UAB Hospital this afternoon, we learned he remains alive. We express our immediate regret for disseminATING false information; we hold complete joy in knowing Medrick remains stable."

The abrupt change sparked reactions from all around the nation, prompting prayers and hopes for Burnett's recovery. Friends, fans, and teammates quickly rallied, showing their support through messages of encouragement and financial contributions aimed at alleviating the burden on Burnett's family. A GoFundMe page was set up for the forward linebacker, which has since raised over $40,000 to help cover medical expenses.

Denise Burnett, Medrick's mother, expressed the challenges facing their family as they dealt with his serious condition publicly. She mentioned to local stations her intent to release more detailed updates at the appropriate time. "When the time arrives, we will issue a statement about what we have been through," she told WAFF news.

Medrick Burnett Jr. hails from Lakewood, California, and had joined Alabama A&M after transferring from Grambling State University earlier this year. Despite his injuries, this past season saw him playing seven games and registering five tackles, with three against Austin Peay.

The Magic City Classic matchup is notable among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and carries significant participation from fans and alumni alike. It is traditionally one of the biggest events for these institutions, contributing to local culture and community pride. This year's event will now be marked not only by fierce competition but also by the urgent need for healing and support for Burnett.

The university has pledged to keep providing updates on his recovery, continuously reinforcing its commitment to supporting both Burnett and his family during this difficult time. Many from the community hope to see the player back on the field by Spring, but for now, all focus remains on Medrick's health and well-being. Followers of his story, including past players and various supporters, have lit the digital space with thoughts and prayers directed toward his recovery.

Throughout this experience, the wide-reaching impact of social media has been evident. The initial announcement spread rapidly online, illustrating just how quickly news can circulate before being thoroughly validated. This incident has underlined the importance of verifying information, especially concerning matters of life and health.

While the mix-up was damaging and brought unnecessary sorrow to many, the ultimate reminder is one of hope—hope for recuperation, hope for burnetts' family during this tumultuous period, and hope for the athletes who navigate such high-risk professions.
