The launch of Akshayakalpa Organic Dairy Enterprise marks a significant stride toward sustainable agriculture and rural empowerment. Founded by Shashi Kumar, the co-founder who transitioned from a successful tech career, Akshayakalpa is India’s first certified organic dairy venture. Established to uplift small and marginalized farmers, this initiative aims to revolutionize dairy farming practices through sustainable methods.
Shashi Kumar, who worked at Wipro Technologies for 13 years, left his corporate job to pursue his passion for agriculture. Growing up in a farming family, he witnessed firsthand the economic struggles faced by his father and many others like him. "My father discouraged me from pursuing agriculture, calling it an economically unviable path," Kumar shared, recounting how his early experiences motivated him to create more opportunities for farmers.
Established in 2010, Akshayakalpa Organic is dedicated to promoting sustainable farming by transforming farmers from mere laborers to entrepreneurs. By providing technical and financial support, as well as market access, the company empowers farmers to adopt organic practices, which eliminate the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides. Their holistic approach ensures farms function as self-sustaining ecosystems where methane gas derived from cow dung powers daily operations, and the remaining residue is used as organic fertilizer.
Over the years, Akshayakalpa has made remarkable strides. Its methods have led to significant improvements, with soil organic carbon levels rising from 0.3% to 0.98%. Central to its mission is the economic uplift of farmers. Those associated with Akshayakalpa can earn, on average, ₹100,000 per month from organic milk, poultry, honey, and various fruits and vegetables. This consistent income stream shields them from volatile market conditions and unpredictable weather.
Currently operating across South Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, Akshayakalpa serves over 60,000 customers, and it also markets long-shelf life products to regions such as Pune, Mumbai, and the National Capital Region. The company’s revenue was reported at ₹195 crore for FY23, with ambitious targets to reach ₹300 crore by FY24. Its growth has been boosted by partnerships with organizations such as Rainmatter Foundation, which supports sustainable businesses backed by Zerodha founders Nithin and Nikhil Kamath.
Thanks to these supports, Akshayakalpa is on track to set new benchmarks not only for itself but also for others observing or participating in the growth of sustainable agriculture. Kumar’s initiative shows the significant impact of marrying technology with traditional farming methods, promoting community development alongside economic viability.
Looking toward the future, Akshayakalpa aims to broaden its market reach, becoming a pan-India brand synonymous with sustainability and organic practices. It plans to continue diversifying its product range, which currently includes not only organic milk and honey but also fruits, vegetables, poultry, and other farm produce.
Shashi Kumar’s inspiring transition from technology professional to leading organic farming pioneer exemplifies the potential for meaningful change within India’s agricultural sector. By fostering self-sufficiency and enhancing community livelihoods, Akshayakalpa Organic sets the stage for sustainable rural development, ensuring the economic resilience of the farmers involved.
