Akif Javed Replaces Injured Haris Rauf For Pakistan's ODI Series

Left-arm pacer steps up as key player amid Rauf's recovery for the Champions Trophy 2025.

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially confirmed the inclusion of left-arm fast bowler Akif Javed as the replacement for the injured Haris Rauf in the current tri-nation ODI series against New Zealand and South Africa. Rauf's absence stems from a muscular sprain sustained in the lower chest wall during the first match against New Zealand.

On Tuesday, the PCB shared the unfortunate news, noting, “Following MRI and X-ray scans, it has been confirmed” Rauf sustained the injury during the match held on February 8 at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. His condition, though not serious, has led to his recommended rest to allow for recovery.

Akif Javed, 24, is stepping up during this challenging time for Pakistan cricket. He has played 30 List A matches, where he has taken 33 wickets at an average of 36, including one five-wicket haul. According to PCB officials, Javed's inclusion is considered solely for the tri-nation ODI series. “The replacement is only for the tri-nation ODI series, as Haris Rauf is expected to be fully fit and available for selection for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025,” said the PCB.

The tri-nation series is proving to be pivotal, especially as Pakistan prepares for their next match against South Africa on February 12. After New Zealand's victory over Pakistan on February 8, the stakes for the upcoming match are high, as it serves as a virtual semi-final to determine which team advances to the final against New Zealand.

While Akif Javed has been recognized for his talent, his experience at the international level is limited. He has recently been part of the Rangpur Riders squad in the Bangladesh Premier League, where he excelled with 20 wickets across 11 matches at an impressive average of 14.30.

Pakistan's squad for the tri-series now consists of several key players, including captain Mohammad Rizwan, along with Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi. The loss of Rauf, who has been instrumental with the ball, raises concerns. His injury was particularly disheartening as he left the field midway through the 38th over of New Zealand's innings last week. Fortunately, PCB has ensured fans and team management alike of Rauf's imminent return. “The injury is not serious, and he is expected to be fully recovered for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025,” they added.

The Champions Trophy is set to commence on February 19, and Pakistan will kick off their campaign against New Zealand. They will face India on February 23, and Bangladesh on February 27, making Rauf’s recovery imperative to solidify their chances.

Selectors faced challenges over whom to replace Rauf with, weighing potential candidates like Mohammad Wasim Jr. and Mohammad Ali. The board finally settled on Javed, who now has the opportunity to make his mark on the international stage.

Fans of the sport will be keeping their fingers crossed, hoping for both immediate success against South Africa and Rauf's speedy recovery for the anticipated clashes to follow.
