Ajinkya Rahane Named KKR Captain For IPL 2025 Season

New leadership hopes to build on KKR’s triumph as defending champions and embrace fresh challenges.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have made a significant leadership change for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, appointing Ajinkya Rahane as their new captain. This decision marks the beginning of a new chapter for the franchise, which looks to defend its title following last season's championship win.

Rahane's rise to captaincy is noteworthy considering his past struggles within the T20 format. After being left unsold during the initial IPL auction rounds due to modest performances, including a difficult stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), KKR identified his experience and potential. They secured him at his base price of Rs 1.50 crore during the accelerated portion of the mega auction last year.

The 2024 IPL season, where KKR clinched their third title, was dominated by Shreyas Iyer as captain, who has since moved on to lead the Punjab Kings this season. Rahane’s return to form has been nothing short of remarkable. During the last domestic season, he excelled, leading Mumbai to victory at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he was the top run-scorer with 469 runs at a phenomenal average of 58.62 and a blistering strike rate of 164.56.

Expressing his enthusiasm about the new role, Rahane said, "Leading KKR is an honour. We have a well-balanced squad, and I look forward to working together to defend our title." His excitement reflects the potential he sees within the current team composition.

Alongside Rahane is Venkatesh Iyer, who has been appointed as vice-captain. Iyer has been with KKR since 2021 and played a pivotal role during their title win last season, scoring 370 runs with a strike rate of 158.79. His recent bidding price of Rs 23.75 crore makes him one of the most expensive players purchased this season, underscoring the team's confidence in his capabilities as both player and leader.

"We are delighted to have someone like Ajinkya Rahane, who brings his experience and maturity as a leader," said KKR CEO Venky Mysore. "Also, Venkatesh Iyer has been a franchise player for KKR and brings a lot of leadership qualities. We are confident they will combine well as we start the defense of our title." This statement highlights KKR’s strategy of leveraging experienced leadership to secure another championship.

Rahane's previous engagement with KKR during the 2022 season was less than stellar, scoring only 133 runs over seven matches. He later rejuvenated his career with CSK, scoring 326 runs last season, drawing upon his vast experience. His leadership skills have also shone through internationally, leading India to victory during their Test series against Australia. Rahane’s past performance as captain—25 matches with notable results—also adds weight to his new role.

The season opener on March 22 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens will set the stage for KKR’s title defense. The match is particularly symbolic as KKR looks to start the season strong, continuing the momentum from their recent success.

Conclusion: With Ajinkya Rahane at the helm and Venkatesh Iyer as his deputy, KKR aims not just to repeat their past glories but to redefine their legacy within the IPL. Fans will eagerly watch as these two leaders take the challenge, embodying the spirit of KKR’s motto: “Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo.” The upcoming season promises to be both thrilling and historic for the franchise.
