Ajay Devgn's Raid 2 Faces Box Office Challenges

Despite a strong start, Ajay Devgn's film sees a drop in earnings but aims for ₹100 crore this week.

Ajay Devgn’s latest release, Raid 2, has been making waves at the box office, but it faced a significant drop in earnings on its first Monday. Released on May 1, 2025, the film, directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, crossed the ₹70 crore mark in just four days, showcasing an impressive start compared to recent blockbusters like Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2 and Sunny Deol’s Jaat 2. However, the film's momentum slowed considerably with a collection of only ₹7.75 crore on May 5, 2025, marking a sharp decline from the ₹22 crore it earned the previous day.

Industry tracker Sacnilk reported that despite the drop, the total domestic box office collection for Raid 2 now stands at ₹79 crore. The film had its highest single-day collection on Sunday, May 4, with ₹22 crore, which was an improvement over Saturday’s ₹18 crore and the opening day earnings of ₹19.25 crore. Friday's earnings were decent at ₹12 crore, but Monday’s figures fell into single digits for the first time, raising questions about the film's ability to reach the coveted ₹100 crore mark.

Trade analysts are keeping a close eye on Raid 2’s performance. Taran Adarsh, a prominent film trade analyst, stated on X, formerly Twitter, “IT'S A HIT... Raid 2 is officially a HIT, and the crucial Monday has confirmed it... After a terrific extended weekend, the film held strong on Day 5, solidifying its status as a genuine success.” He noted the film's potential to continue performing well throughout the week, especially as it faces fresh competition starting May 9, 2025, from Karan Sharma’s romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi.

The sequel to the 2018 hit Raid, which also starred Ajay Devgn as IRS officer Amay Patnaik, Raid 2 introduces Vaani Kapoor in place of Ileana D’Cruz, who played Devgn’s wife in the first film. The film also features Riteish Deshmukh as the antagonist, alongside Rajat Kapoor, Supriya Pathak, Amit Sial, and Saurabh Shukla. The story follows Patnaik as he returns to fight corruption after being transferred for conducting 74 raids, this time taking on a corrupt politician.

As of May 6, 2025, Raid 2 has reportedly earned ₹5.4 crore from its morning, afternoon, and evening shows, bringing its total earnings to ₹84.15 crore. On this day, the film had an overall occupancy rate of 12.38%. Despite the drop in footfall, it has shown better performance than other Hindi films currently in theaters. Major cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad have been leading in terms of screenings, with Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Jaipur showing better occupancy rates.

The film's worldwide collection reached ₹108.65 crore by the end of its fifth day, with ₹15 crore coming from overseas markets. The India gross collection stood at ₹93.65 crore on the same day. Analysts predict that with the current trajectory, Raid 2 could reach an extended Week 1 total of over ₹95 crore.

Ajay Devgn’s success with sequels began with Drishyam 2, which earned an impressive ₹239.67 crore at the domestic box office in 2022. Following Raid 2, he is set to appear in more sequels, including Son of Sardar 2 and De De Pyaar De 2. This trend of successful sequels highlights the enduring popularity of Devgn and his ability to draw audiences to theaters.

As Raid 2 continues its run, the film industry is watching closely to see if it can overcome its recent challenges and secure a place among the highest-grossing films of the year. With its gripping storyline, strong performances, and a star-studded cast, it remains a significant contender in the competitive landscape of Bollywood releases.
