AI's Role Sparks Debate Among BIPA Educators

Experts discuss future prospects and challenges of language teaching with AI integration.

On Friday, February 28, 2025, the Afiliasi Pegiat dan Pengajar Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asi (APPBIPA Jateng) convened virtually for the fourth installment of its MARANG BIPA series, focusing on the pressing intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and language instruction. The theme for this session was particularly relevant as it explored the question, 'When AI Teaches Language: What is the Future of BIPA Teachers?'

The event commenced at 1:00 PM, hosted via the Zoom application under the moderation of Elita Ulfiana, M.A., who leads the education and training coordination for APPBIPA Jateng and serves as a lecturer at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta. Participants included students, educators, and language advocates from various educational institutions across and beyond Central Java.

Dr. Raden Arief Nugroho, the keynote speaker from Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, presented insightful observations stemming from his experiences teaching BIPA courses at the Indonesian Language and Culture Services (ILCS) at UDINUS. His discourse revolved around the influential role AI plays within language learning contexts and how language teachers can adapt to ever-evolving technological landscapes.

With artificial intelligence making significant strides across various sectors, Dr. Arief's insights are timely. He relayed findings from classroom observations, including how students utilized diverse communication tools such as WhatsApp and email to facilitate language learning. Significantly, he noted instances where learners began acquiring proficiency in Indonesian through platforms using AI, such as Chat GPT.

During his discussion, Dr. Arief emphasized two primary areas for reflection among BIPA teachers. First, he highlighted the risk of being supplanted by AI if instructors remain solely focused on language delivery without embracing innovation. Secondly, he pointed out the potential for displacement if educators neglect to align their teaching strategies with community integration.

Despite these challenges, Dr. Arief was optimistic, outlining avenues where language instructors could flourish alongside AI technology. He advocated for educators to cultivate supportive relationships with their students, acting as facilitators and allies rather than mere transmitters of information. This approach could cement the teacher's role as indispensable guides within language learning journeys.

To anticipate the challenges posed by AI, Dr. Arief proposed proactive measures for BIPA educators. He suggested conducting research to identify AI's shortcomings, integrating AI tools within instructional methods, and emphasizing continuous professional development and training. Appraising AI's strengths and pitfalls will allow teachers to leverage technology effectively.

Institutions, too, have pivotal roles to play. Dr. Arief called for educational organizations to prioritize training sessions on 'Teaching and AI,' along with advocating for funding avenues to explore AI's integration within education systems.

Dr. Arief concluded his presentation with the thought-provoking question, 'Artificial Intelligence: Friend or Foe?' This inquiry encapsulates the overarching concerns and debates about AI's double-edged influence within modern language education, prompting educators to reflect critically on their future roles.

With technology advancing at such rapid rates, it is imperative for educators to adapt and collaborate with these changes to not merely survive but to thrive. The MARANG BIPA #4 event is one of many steps toward redefining the paradigms of language instruction, ensuring BIPA instructors remain relevant and impactful.
