AIDA Cruises Announces New Ships For 2030 And 2031

The German cruise line expands its fleet with innovative multi-fuel vessels built by Fincantieri in Italy.

AIDA Cruises, the German cruise line headquartered in Rostock, has made waves in the maritime industry with its recent announcement of two new cruise ships, set to launch in 2030 and 2031. This exciting development was revealed during the Seatrade Cruise Global event taking place in Miami, USA, where the company signed a contract with the Italian shipyard Fincantieri.

The new ships will feature approximately 2,100 passenger cabins, accommodating around 4,200 passengers at double occupancy. This size positions them between the existing vessels AIDAprima and AIDAnova, marking a significant shift in AIDA's shipbuilding strategy. AIDA President Felix Eichhorn emphasized this point, stating, "With this ship size, we will offer our guests an entirely new ship class that ranks in size between AIDAprima and AIDAcosma."

In a notable departure from previous practices, AIDA has opted to build these ships at Fincantieri rather than Meyer Werft in Papenburg, which has constructed nine of the eleven ships in AIDA's fleet. This strategic move aligns with the growing partnership between AIDA's parent company, Carnival Corporation, and Fincantieri, which is also responsible for the upcoming Project Ace ship class.

The new vessels represent a shift towards smaller, more sustainable ships, reflecting changing consumer preferences and environmental considerations. AIDA's decision to focus on a new class of ships comes after a period of renovation projects, including the recent overhaul of AIDAdiva, which has just returned to service after extensive modernization in Marseille.

These new ships will be equipped with innovative multi-fuel engines capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG), bio-diesel, and other sustainable fuels. Eichhorn noted that this technology not only meets current standards but is also prepared for future bio- and e-fuels, showcasing AIDA's commitment to environmentally friendly operations. "Our next ship generation stands for innovative technology with multi-fuel drives," he added.

The development of these new vessels is particularly timely, as the cruise industry is witnessing a resurgence in demand following the pandemic-induced slowdown. AIDA has been proactive in responding to this demand, having previously sold four smaller ships during the pandemic and now looking to expand its fleet again.

In addition to these new builds, AIDA is investing a significant amount into modernizing three of its older vessels, Aidadiva, Aidabella, and Aidaluna, which were built between 2007 and 2009. These modernizations are also taking place in Marseille, further solidifying the company's relationship with the French shipyard.

As part of its broader strategy, AIDA is keen to maintain its status as a leading cruise line in Germany, where it is the most important customer of the port in Kiel. The company has reported that approximately 60 of the 170 cruise ship calls this year will be from its fleet, indicating a strong presence in the region.

The announcement of the new ships has been met with enthusiasm from both industry insiders and potential passengers. The combination of innovative technology, a focus on sustainability, and a commitment to enhancing the guest experience positions AIDA Cruises well for the future. As Eichhorn remarked, "Our new ships will not only excite our AIDA fans but also countless new guests."

With the commissioning of the new ships planned for Spring 2030 and Winter 2031/2032, AIDA is poised to make a significant impact in the cruise market, catering to a growing demand for unique and sustainable travel experiences. The upcoming vessels are expected to blend luxury with cutting-edge technology, ensuring that AIDA remains a competitive player in the ever-evolving cruise industry.

As the cruise sector continues to rebound, AIDA's strategic investments and innovative approaches will likely set the tone for future developments in the industry. With a focus on sustainability and passenger comfort, AIDA is not just expanding its fleet; it is redefining what it means to cruise in the modern era.
