Aichi Prefecture Unveils Ambitious Plans For 2025

Governor highlights autonomous vehicles and tourism projects to shape future growth

Aichi Prefecture is gearing up for transformative changes as it embarks on 2025 with ambitious plans, including the integration of autonomous vehicles. During the New Year address on January 6, Governor Hideaki Omura emphasized the significance of past achievements, such as the launch of the Ghibli Park and STATION Ai, to forge Aichi’s path forward.

This year, Aichi intends to introduce autonomous electric vehicles for public transport within the scenic Aichi Earth Expo Memorial Park—known for its Ghibli-themed attractions. A significant highlight is the aim to operate level-4 autonomous buses, requiring no driver under specific conditions, making Aichi the first prefecture to roll out such advanced technology.

By the November 2025 rollout, the park will showcase 57-passenger buses, currently operated by human drivers, on its routes. At the park, two additional autonomous vehicles will supplement existing traffic particularly on the western route—a 5.5-kilometer stretch known for light pedestrian traffic. This will not only provide visitors with cutting-edge technology but also encourage tourism as the park prepares for its 20th-anniversary celebration of the Aichi Expo.

Reflecting on the past year, Governor Omura noted, "Last year was one of creation and transformation, marked by two significant projects gaining global attention." His remarks centered on the synergy generated from the Ghibli Park and STATION Ai's opening, calling this partnership as fundamental to Aichi's growth narrative. He foresees 2025 as a continuation of these advances, echoing the ancient Chinese saying "tōda yūmu"—symbolizing ascension and progress.

This vision aligns with the larger development framework for Aichi aimed at fostering innovation across various sectors. Omura emphasized Aichi's industry strength and its commitment to producing future talent to uphold those industries. He highlighted initiatives focusing on sustainability, technology, and community engagement as pathways to enhanced living standards for the prefecture's residents.

One of the boldest initiatives planned for the coming year is the commencement of the "World Robot Summit 2025" being hosted at Aichi Sky Expo, reinforcing its status as the epicenter of robotic innovation. This international event will encompass discussions, exhibits, and competitions showcasing the latest advancements, drawing attention from around the globe.

The governor's New Year address did not shy away from discussing pressing social issues such as the decreasing birth rate. The prefecture plans to continue implementing measures such as free or subsidized childcare and the establishment of online support systems for marriage and family planning. This concern intertwines with the overall growth agenda outlined for Aichi, demonstrating the intent to bolster community resilience.

Aichi's approach to tourism also stands out with plans to promote the Ghibli Park as a central element of its destination brand. By doing so, the prefecture hopes to attract visitors domestically and from overseas, optimizing its cultural treasures and natural beauty.

Highlighting collaboration with local stakeholders, the prefecture aims to wrap its innovations around community needs. With support for startups, illustrated by the programs at STATION Ai, Aichi demonstrates its readiness to embrace and cultivate new businesses, strengthening the local economy.

Governor Omura stated, “Through collaboration and innovation, we aim to create Aichi as the most attractive region both to live and work.” This sentiment encapsulates the modern Aichi Prefecture—forward-thinking, community-oriented, and uniquely positioned to leverage its cultural and industrial strengths.

The auto industry, monikered by Toyota's roots, plays a fundamental role within Aichi’s broader economic framework. This stature propels initiatives like hydrogen energy and the adaptation of electric vehicles, elements the governor pitches as part of Aichi’s sustainability goal. The launch of corresponding charging infrastructure across the prefecture aligns with Japan's commitment to climate action, coinciding with the 2030 carbon neutrality objectives.

The proposals extending to various sectors depict Aichi's commitment to its people. Whether it's via education, health, technology, or culture, the prefecture is committed to building upon its existing frameworks to drive engagement so every citizen can find their niche.

Governor Omura closed his address with well wishes for Aichi’s citizens, expressing hopes for a year filled with joy and prosperity. The initiatives for 2025, framed within the growth lens of both autonomous mobility and enhanced cultural experiences, position Aichi as not just another prefecture but as a model of future-driven modernization.

The roadmap drawn by Aichi hints at significant transformation fueled by innovation, community belonging, and striving toward sustainability. 2025 could well see Aichi push for new heights, turning challenges faced today, like declining birth rates and environmental issues, as stepping-stones toward enduring prosperity.
