Ai Miue To Star In 2026 NHK Morning Drama Kaze, Kaoru

The dual heroine story set during Japan's Meiji era highlights struggles of women entering nursing.

On April 24, NHK held a press conference to announce the casting for the 2026 spring edition of its popular morning drama, set to be titled Kaze, Kaoru. The lead role has been granted to actress Ai Miue, known for her compelling performance as Fujiwara no Akiko in the recent Taiga drama Hikaru Kimi e.

This 114th installment of the morning drama series revolves around two women who, amid the tumult of the Meiji Restoration, enter the nursing profession at a time when women's careers were not yet established. The narrative is inspired by real-life figures Chika Ozeki and Masa Suzuki, who became known as 'Trained Nurses' during this transformative period. The story will depict their struggles and growth, highlighting their relationships with patients and doctors as they develop from colleagues to the strongest of partners.

Miue will play the character Rin Ichinose, hailing from Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture. The second lead role of Naomi Oya will be filled through auditions now open to the public—a significant detail, with this drama being the first of its kind to feature dual heroines since 2008.

At the press conference, Miue expressed her excitement and emotional response to receiving the role just one week prior, stating, "I was overwhelmed with joy and couldn't quite believe it. I've often avoided setting specific career goals to keep my opportunities open, but I found myself repeatedly auditioning for morning dramas—reflecting my true desire to participate."

She emphasized the importance of morning dramas, saying, "Mornings can set the tone for the entire day. I feel honored to contribute to something meaningful, enhancing how viewers start their day. I hope this drama can be the spark for wonderful mornings for everyone." Miue's natural charisma charmed the audience, as she interacted with the media and attendees with warmth and openness throughout the event.

The script for Kaze, Kaoru will be penned by Tomoko Yoshizawa, known for her work on hit series such as Anata no Koto wa Sorehodo and Hajimete Koi wo Shita Hi ni Yomu Hanashi. Meanwhile, Takahiro Matsuzono, who produced Hikaru Kimi e, will serve as the show's chief director. This collaboration aims to draw on past successes to enrich this new story about overcoming hardship through friendship and resilience.

Exploring themes of female empowerment and camaraderie, Kaze, Kaoru has garnered anticipation not only for its cast but also for its representation of women's roles during the Meiji era, providing viewers with both historical perspective and relatable drama. The casting call for the second lead character is set to attract considerable interest, as many aspiring actresses vie for the chance to join Miue, whose rising star has captured the public's imagination since her television debut.

Overall, the announcement of Kaze, Kaoru signals another exciting chapter for NHK's morning dramas, continuing their legacy of storytelling infused with social relevance and human emotion. With Miue at the forefront, fans eagerly await what promises to be both an engaging and inspiring watch when it airs.
