Ai Mikami Cast As Lead In 2026 NHK Drama 'Wind, Sleeps'

The drama explores the trials of two nurses during Japan's Meiji era, showcasing their growth and partnership.

NHK has announced the lead actress for its much-anticipated 2026 morning serial drama 'Wind, Sleeps.' During the production conference held on January 24, 2025, actress Ai Mikami was confirmed to portray the character Ichinose Rin. This announcement marks the start of excitement surrounding the show's debut, set for early 2026.

'Wind, Sleeps' is expected to weave the personal and professional struggles faced by two nurses against the turbulent backdrop of the Meiji era. Scripted by Tomoko Yoshizawa and produced by Takehiro Matsumura, the drama aims to capture the essence of growth, partnership, and the challenges faced by women stepping onto the then-nascent field of nursing.

Mikami, who described her role as both thrilling and surreal, expressed her feelings at the press conference. "I can't believe it! It's like words are slipping through my fingers, it's the first time I’ve felt this way," she reflected, emphasizing the weight of the responsibility she feels taking on the role of Ichinose Rin.

The narrative will chart the journeys of Mikami’s character and her yet-to-be-cast partner as they navigate their profession's demands, societal challenges, and personal growth. The duo will present contrasting approaches to nursing, leading to both conflict and camaraderie as they evolve from fellow graduates to best friends.

Throughout their adventures, viewers will see them tackle difficult situations and forge bonds with patients, as well as develop their strength as nurses. The show promises to highlight their dedication to patient care during the Meiji period, showcasing nursing's importance as it becomes more recognized as a profession.

Reflecting on her role, Mikami mentioned, "I have been focusing on making sure those working on set can do so without discomfort. It's difficult, but working together to create something meaningful is important," referring to her commitment to fostering positive working conditions for the entire cast and crew, hoping this will translate to the quality of the final product.

Ai Mikami's casting also draws attention due to her previous standout performance as Fujiwara Akiko in the hit Taiga drama 'Glowing You'. Her transition to the lead role in 'Wind, Sleeps' has garnered enthusiasm from fans of the series, with many expressing excitement for her new chapter as a morning drama heroine.

The serial drama will follow 'Rice Ball', which is currently airing with Kana Hashimoto as the lead, and will be succeeded by 'Anpan' featuring Mio Imada. It shows NHK's continuing tradition of nurturing talent and storytelling within Japanese television.

With 'Wind, Sleeps', viewers can look forward to the exploration of women’s struggles and triumphs within the historically significant field of nursing, likely evoking both empathy and motivation.

Fans are eagerly awaiting more details about the second lead character, who will be chosen through auditions, adding another layer of anticipation as the drama prepares for its early 2026 debut. The synergy between Mikami and her eventual co-star promises to offer compelling television infused with emotion and resilience.
