AI Integration Boosts Vietnam’s Education Amidst Challenges

Vietnam is striving to incorporate AI technology across educational platforms to improve quality and workforce readiness.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the education sector is rapidly becoming more than just a trend; it's now viewed as an indispensable requirement for modernization. According to Trần Đức Linh, a lecturer at RMIT University Vietnam, the push for AI adoption is not only aimed at enhancing teaching quality but also at developing competitive human resources within the global technology marketplace.

A survey conducted by Microsoft reveals eye-opening statistics: about 47% of educational leaders are actively using AI daily to improve instructional efficiency. Meanwhile, approximately 68% of teachers and 62% of students have applied AI at least once or twice for lesson planning and writing improvement. These figures illuminate how AI is gradually becoming an unavoidable tool within the learning environment.

Within Vietnam, the Ministry of Education and Training has taken significant strides to embed AI within curricula, spanning from secondary education to higher education. Prestigious institutions such as Đại học Bách khoa Hà Nội and Đại học FPT are rolling out specialized AI courses aimed at equipping students with the necessary skill set. Complementing these initiatives are various online platforms, like VietAI and FUNiX, which attract numerous learners annually with structured courses on AI, thereby rendering advanced technology more accessible to Vietnamese students.

Despite the promising outlook, the ramp-up of AI education is fraught with considerable challenges. Structural challenges around legal frameworks and quality assurance need to be effectively addressed to guarantee the efficacy of AI-inclusive programs. Dr. Linh emphasizes to Doanh nghiệp và Hội nhập Magazine the necessity of adapting existing legal frameworks to meet the unique challenges posed by AI technologies, including ethical usage, data security, and ownership rights.

"With the rapid pace of AI development, legal frameworks must not be rigid; they need to embody flexibility and adaptability to future technological changes," Dr. Linh asserts.

Without clear regulations, problems such as academic dishonesty through AI manipulation or the dissemination of misleading information could severely impact educational quality. Alongside legal structures, the refinement of instructional content and quality control concerning AI-integrated programs remains pivotal. Dr. Linh asserts, "Educators and education managers need to be thoroughly trained on AI application to develop suitable programs for each education level, ensuring scientific accuracy and culturally relevant content for Vietnam."

An effective AI education program not only needs to keep pace with global trends but also must resonate with the learning styles of Vietnamese students. To realize this, he believes holistic approaches must be taken, starting with research and the adaptation of successful global education models. Investment in training for educators about AI applications is equally important, as they are key drivers in guiding students through the AI learning process.

Another important aspect is developing student-centric curricula, promoting age-appropriate engagements with AI. Dr. Linh highlights the need for continuous updates to educational programs to integrate current technological trends and embed principles of ethics and safety, helping students understand their responsibilities when utilizing these technologies.

The learning framework should not just focus on theory but also encourage practical application of AI through hands-on projects. This practical focus not only hones skills but also prepares Vietnam to cultivate high-quality tech talent for the future.

One of the greatest challenges facing AI adoption within education is fostering creativity without compromising safety against misuse. Dr. Linh pointed out, "Educational authorities play a pivotal role in balancing the encouragement of creativity with managing risks associated with AI application within educational environments."

He recommends establishing clear ethical, accountability, and safety guidelines for AI usage to avoid stifling innovation and development. Supporting educational projects utilizing AI provides institutions with the opportunity to experiment and implement AI effectively.

Enhancing awareness and comprehension about AI for teachers, students, and communities is also key. "If everyone understands the benefits and risks associated with AI, we can utilize this technology more safely and effectively," he notes.

Vietnam should also bolster international collaboration to glean insights from countries leading the way in AI education. "Sharing experienced practices and adopting appropriate educational AI models will allow us to build an advanced educational system," stresses Dr. Linh.

Finally, establishing supervisory mechanisms is imperative to confirm AI is employed responsibly within educational contexts. Although it’s indisputable AI can significantly boost teaching quality, without appropriate controls, unintended negative consequences could arise.

The broader push to integrate AI within Vietnam's educational framework signifies not just strides forward but also formidable challenges. Dr. Linh concludes, "For success, cooperative efforts from the government, educational entities, and the community are required. A flexible legal framework, aligned curricula, and rigorous quality assurance will enable AI to effectively support Vietnam's education system within the digital era,"
