Sophisticated AI phishing and cryptocurrency scams are fooling all ages as new research reveals most people can’t spot the difference between real and fake messages.

Scams and fraud may be as old as civilization itself, but the digital tools of 2025 have given criminals a frightening new edge. According to experts and recent surveys, the rise of artificial intelligence, cryptocurrencies, and easy access to stolen personal data has supercharged scam tactics, making them more convincing—and more costly—than ever before.

Today’s fraudsters are no longer relying on clumsy emails full of spelling errors. Surprisingly, age was no shield: awareness rates were nearly identical across generations, from Gen Z to baby boomers.

The survey also revealed how widespread these attacks have become. In the past year, 44% of respondents said they had interacted with a phishing message—clicked a link, opened an attachment, or otherwise engaged. Even more alarming, 13% admitted to falling for a phishing scam within the week before the survey. Younger people appeared especially vulnerable, with 62% of Gen Z respondents reporting they’d been tricked in the past year, compared to 51% of millennials, 33% of Gen X, and 23% of baby boomers. When asked why, 34% said the message seemed to come from a trusted source, while 25% confessed they were simply rushing and didn’t stop to think.

Scammers are also capitalizing on the blurred lines between work and personal technology. The same survey found that half of all respondents log into work accounts on personal devices—often without their employer’s knowledge. Meanwhile, 40% use personal email on work devices, and 17% even access online banking from their work laptops. This overlap makes it dangerously easy for a single phishing attack to compromise both personal and professional data.

Old scams haven’t disappeared—they’ve just evolved. Phishing and smishing, once notorious for their clumsy grammar and obvious mistakes, are now powered by AI that mimics corporate tone, grammar, and even video content. Tech support scams often start with pop-ups warning of a virus or identity theft, urging users to call a bogus number. Once on the line, victims are persuaded to grant remote access to their computers, leading to malware installation or data theft.

Cryptocurrency remains a scammer’s paradise. As The Conversation explains, "Crypto remains the Wild West of finance — fast, unregulated and ripe for exploitation." Pump-and-dump schemes, where scammers hype a cryptocurrency on social media before cashing out and leaving investors holding worthless tokens, are rampant. Another tactic, known as "pig butchering," blends romance scams with crypto fraud. Here, scammers build trust over weeks or months before convincing victims to invest in fake crypto platforms—then disappear with the money. Even education and employment aren’t immune. Fraudulent websites impersonating universities or ticket sellers trick victims into paying for fake admissions or goods. One notable case involved a fake "Southeastern Michigan University" website in 2025, which copied content from Eastern Michigan University and duped unsuspecting applicants. The rise of remote and gig work has also opened new avenues for scams: fake job offers promise high pay and flexible hours, but instead extract "placement fees" or harvest sensitive personal data for later identity theft.

Given the sophistication of modern scams, even cybersecurity professionals admit they can be fooled. AI-powered phishing messages are now virtually flawless, written in perfect grammar, tailored with personal data scraped from public sources, and often indistinguishable from legitimate communications. Attackers routinely scrape names, job titles, and contact details from public databases, then use that information to train AI models capable of mimicking real emails you’d expect to see.

Despite the mounting risks, basic digital hygiene is still lacking. According to CyberGuy.com, three in ten people have not enabled multi-factor authentication (MFA) on their personal accounts, and 40% say their employer never provided cybersecurity training. Many companies rely on inconsistent authentication methods, making it easier for attackers to slip through the cracks.

So, what can you do to protect yourself? Experts recommend a few key steps:

First, enable MFA on every account that supports it—especially email, banking, and work logins. This adds a crucial layer of security, making it far harder for attackers to access your data even if they steal your password.
