AFC Champions League Elite Finals Venues Confirmed

Saudi Arabia set to host prestigious tournament as stakes rise with record prize money.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially announced the venues for the highly anticipated AFC Champions League Elite Finals for the 2024/25 season. This announcement, made on February 20, 2024, reveals the King Abdullah Sports City and Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as the host venues for the prestigious tournament, which will take place from April 25 to May 3, 2025.

These stadiums will not only serve as the battlegrounds for Asia’s top eight clubs vying for dominance but will also witness historical matches, including two quarter-finals and one semi-final, leading up to the grand final set at the King Abdullah Sports City. The AFC expressed optimism for these sites to host such significant games, marking them as ideal locations for this premier event.

A major draw for the finals this season is the record prize purse of USD 12 million, which will be awarded to the champions—the highest ever seen in Asian club football history. AFC officials noted, “Both stadiums – which will also host the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 – are poised to set the backdrop for two Quarter-final ties and one Semi-final encounter each,” highlighting the extensive involvement of Saudi Arabia in upcoming international football events.

For participating teams, the stakes have never been higher. The new financial structure is part of significant reforms aimed at increasing the competitiveness of Asian football. “The financial reward is three times more than the equivalent of the 2023/24 season. Similarly, the losing finalist will also receive a threefold increase of USD 6 million,” stated the AFC. This increase aims to attract more talent and investment to the league, ensuring teams put forth their best efforts.

With the knockout stage looming, round of 16 match-ups have now been finalized following the conclusion of the league stage on February 18, with notable representation from Saudi Arabia. Three clubs—Al Hilal SFC, Al Ahli Saudi FC, and Al Nassr Club—have made significant headway and will compete to secure their places among the elite. Other clubs from the West Zone include Al Sadd SC from Qatar, Al Rayyan SC, and Pakhtakor FC from Uzbekistan, rounding out the competitive mix.

The East Zone features formidable Japanese teams such as Yokohama F. Marinos and Kawasaki Frontale, also separated to maximize the drama of the tournament. They will face off against clubs from China, South Korea, Thailand, and Malaysia. The match-ups promise to deliver thrilling encounters as each team battles for supremacy to progress to the knockout stages.

The entire first round of matches is set to occur between March 3 and 5, 2024, with return legs following just one week later, ensuring swift knockouts and high-stakes play. With excitement building, expectations are soaring both within the regions represented and among football fans worldwide.

Indeed, this is the first season of the revamped and restructured AFC Champions League Elite, and it is already poised to make history. A significant prize pool marks not just financial growth for the league, but also greater competitiveness between clubs, encouraging them to ramp up their performance levels to vie for the coveted title.

Given the potential for multiple Saudi teams advancing through the rounds, speculation is rife about the likelihood of domestic triumph. Such success would not only boost local morale but also showcase the country’s burgeoning football talent on the Asian stage.

Fans and analysts alike are watching the developments closely as the teams prepare to shuffle onto the pitch for this significant tournament. Every match promises nail-biting drama and reveals the growing talent pools across Asia, deeply rooted in passionate regional rivalries.

With the match dates approaching, anticipation builds as clubs head to Jeddah's iconic venues, ready to etch their names in the annals of AFC Champions League history. The next few months will unquestionably electrify the Asian football scene, paving the way for what could be one of the most memorable tournaments to date.
