Advocacy Grows For Inclusion Of AM Radio

State Attorneys General push Congress to mandate AM radio in new vehicles for emergency preparedness

Across the United States, AM radio is finding itself at the center of growing advocacy as prominent state officials rally to push the notion of incorporating AM radio functionality in new vehicles. Following the devastation left by Hurricane Helene, which wreaked havoc on communities along the Eastern coast, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird and Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody have co-authored a letter to Congress calling for the protection and continued existence of AM radios in modern cars. This push occurs amid alarming trends showing car manufacturers moving away from including AM radios, raising questions about accessibility during emergencies.

Bird and Moody's letter highlights the indispensable role AM radio serves, especially during crises. They cite examples from Hurricane Helene, when many residents found AM broadcasts the only reliable source of information as other forms of communication faltered under the disaster's weight. Electricity and cellular networks often become unreliable during such emergencies, making AM radio the lifeline for affected communities. “When disaster strikes, we must be prepared,” remarked Attorney General Bird, stressing the urgency of including AM radio as part of the nation’s emergency preparedness strategy.

The letter champions the "AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act," underscoring the necessity of mandatorily equipping cars with AM radios. The legislation aims not just to preserve AM radio but to recognize it officially as a life-saving communication tool. AM radio enjoys broader signal reach over FM, making it capable of carrying emergency alerts over vast distances. This is particularly significant for rural areas where many individuals rely on AM radio for news and weather updates.

Bird and Moody's call has garnered support from their counterparts across the nation. Attorneys General from states like Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, and South Dakota have co-signed the letter, underscoring a collective acknowledgment of AM radio’s importance. Not only does it provide local news and ambient entertainment, but especially for farmers and ranchers, it also offers weather updates, which are particularly significant for their work.

Adding to the momentum, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) also acknowledges AM stations as primary players for broadcasting emergency alerts efficiently. With nearly 80 AM radio stations nationwide operating as Primary Entry Points for emergency broadcasts, these stations are pivotal to public safety, covering about 90% of U.S. territory. The agreement from several former FEMA leaders characterizes the abandonment of AM radios as “a grave threat” to future disaster responses by local, state, and federal entities.

The conversation doesn’t stop at advocacy; it dives deep to address automobile manufacturers' varying concerns. Many have expressed particularly strong reservations about AM radios interfering with the increasingly fantastic landscapes of electrification, with some electric vehicles reported to have electromagnetic interference issues affecting signal integrity. This has led to some automakers taking the step of ceasing the installations of AM radios entirely.

Attorney General Marty Jackley from South Dakota has echoed these sentiments across the Midwest, lending his state’s voice to the legislative initiative. Prompted by the active participation of states advocating for AM radio inclusivity, the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act aims to direct the Department of Transportation to legally require integration of AM broadcast radio as standard equipment.

For many people, radio isn’t just about entertainment; it plays multifaceted roles, blending music, discussions, and indispensable public announcements, especially during emergencies. Educational initiatives are also functioning actively, illuminating the consequences of making AM radio inaccessible.

Interestingly, this isn’t merely about preserving nostalgia for older broadcasting technologies. It’s about recognizing the very real impacts on lives, accessibility, and emergency preparedness, and ensuring rural communities aren't left without key communication tools when they need them the most.

The urgency to preserve AM radio is crystal clear when lives are at stake, particularly seen through the lens of recent storms. History has taught many lessons, and if AM radio can save lives, isn't it worth safeguarding? Should AM radios be phased out, it wouldn't just be the end of the relationship to vintage radio programming; it would mean potentially losing invaluable communication layers for countless citizens, making the call for action ever more resolute.

The campaign for including AM radio in vehicles is not just about keeping the airwaves alive; it’s about sustaining important connections between governments and the public during crises. The outpouring of support from various attorney generals serves as both foundational and hopeful for continuing advocacy for this legislative change. The next steps involve moving Congress to not just hear but act upon these calls to preserve the lines of communication when they matter most. Let's hope the resonance of this campaign echoes as loudly as the voices of all the communities relying on the reliable static of AM radio frequencies.
