Japanese waka poetry, with its unique structure and rich cultural connotations, has long been cherished as a significant aspect of Japanese literature. Recent advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have opened new avenues for translating this literary treasure, especially as cultural exchanges between China and Japan flourish. A new study presents optimized neural machine translation (NMT) models aimed at enhancing the translation of waka poetry from Japanese to Chinese.

Waka poetry, characterized by its strict syllabic structure—typically composed of five lines with syllable patterns of 5-7-5-7-7—poses distinct challenges for translation. Traditional translation methods often fail to capture the phonetic beauty and emotional subtleties embedded within the original text. This is largely due to linguistic differences between Japanese, which is agglutinative and relies heavily on particles, and Chinese, which is isolative and concise.
