Advance Polls Open For Federal Election Starting Today

Eligible voters can cast their ballots early until April 21 ahead of the April 28 election day.

Advance polling for the 2025 federal election in Canada has officially begun, providing voters with the opportunity to cast their ballots ahead of the official election day on April 28. Starting today, eligible voters can head to their assigned polling stations to participate in the democratic process.

The advance polls opened on April 18 and will remain accessible until April 21, allowing voters to cast their votes from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day. This initiative aims to encourage higher voter turnout and accommodate those who may be unable to vote on the designated election day.

According to James Hale from Elections Canada, polling stations have been outlined on Voter Information Cards, which were mailed out to registered voters in the weeks leading up to the advance polling dates. Hale emphasized, "A Voter Information Card is not a ticket to vote, obviously. Anyone who has voted before knows it’s just a piece of identification and it speeds the process up when you go to the election poll and it also tells you where your poll is." Voters can also verify their polling locations online via the Elections Canada website.

For those who prefer to vote by mail, applications must be submitted by April 22 at 6 p.m. NT, with ballots needing to be returned either by mail or in person at an Elections Canada office before the polls close on election day. Special ballot voting will be available at acute care facilities starting on April 20 and will continue until April 22.

To ensure a smooth voting experience, individuals are reminded to bring proper identification to the polling stations. Elections Canada lists three acceptable options for proving identity and address:

  • Option 1: Present a driver's license or any government-issued ID that includes a photo, name, and current address.

  • Option 2: Show two pieces of ID with the voter's name, at least one of which must include the current address. Accepted examples include a utility bill and a student ID card.

  • Option 3: Voters without ID can declare their identity and address in writing and have someone who is assigned to the polling station vouch for them.

As the election date approaches, registered voters should have received their Voter Information Cards by April 11, detailing their assigned polling locations. The election day will see polls open from 9:30 a.m. NT to 9:30 p.m. NT, giving voters ample time to participate in the electoral process.

The upcoming election is significant, with candidates representing various parties across multiple ridings. For instance, in Newfoundland and Labrador, candidates include incumbent Joanne Thompson from the Liberal Party, David Brazil from the Conservative Party, and Mary Shortall from the NDP, among others. In the Avalon riding, Paul Connors (Liberal) and Steve Kent (Conservative) are vying for votes, while in Cape Spear, Corey Curtis (Conservative) and Tom Osborne (Liberal) are in contention.

In Simcoe North, incumbent Adam Chambers (PC) faces competition from Ryan Rocca (Liberal), Melissa Lloyd (NDP), and several others. The diverse array of candidates reflects the rich political landscape of Canada and offers voters a choice that aligns with their values and priorities.

As the advance polling period unfolds, many Canadians are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure their voices are heard. With the backdrop of various pressing issues, including economic concerns and social policies, voters are urged to consider their choices carefully and participate actively in shaping the future of their communities.

In addition to the advance polls, voters can also participate in the election by casting their votes on April 28 at their assigned polling stations. For those who are unable to vote in person, the option to vote by mail remains a viable alternative, ensuring that everyone has the chance to make their voices heard.

As the federal election approaches, the emphasis on voter participation is more critical than ever. Advocates and community leaders are working diligently to ensure that all eligible voters, including marginalized groups, have the necessary resources and information to cast their votes.

In summary, the opening of advance polls marks a significant step in the electoral process, providing Canadians with the opportunity to engage in democracy ahead of the April 28 election day. With various methods of voting available, including in-person and mail-in options, voters are encouraged to prepare and participate actively in this vital civic duty.
