Adobe has unveiled its new Reflection Removal tool, which promises to transform how photographers edit their travel photos. This latest innovation, featured within the Adobe Camera Raw program, aims to address one of the long-standing frustrations of photography: removing unwanted reflections from images captured through glass.
Reflections can be particularly pesky when taking snapshots through windows, whether it’s at the museum or sitting on a plane. While traditional methods for eliminating reflections often require tedious manual adjustments, Adobe's Reflection Removal tool uses artificial intelligence to simplify the process significantly. Inspired by the company’s previous projects, this new feature was first demonstrated at the Adobe Max 2023 event and is now available for those enrolled as Creative Cloud subscribers.
Historically, if photographers didn’t carry polarizing filters, they had few options for dealing with reflections after the fact. Major editing programs allowed users to engage with reflections, but the results were often far from satisfactory. Adobe now aims to change the narrative with its cutting-edge AI capabilities.

The Reflection Removal tool works by identifying two distinct images layered within one frame: the actual scene being photographed and the reflected view. The AI sifts through the captured data to evaluate the reflections and adjust the image accordingly.
Despite the significant strides made by Adobe’s new technology, experts and early users caution it’s not yet perfect. The software performs best when reflections dominate the image, making it easier for the AI to distinguish what it should remove. For example, trial runs on reflections trapped within small objects like sunglasses revealed some difficulties. The results from images of Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses showed clearer lenses but didn’t fully eliminate the reflections, highlighting the tool's limitations.
Adobe acknowledges these challenges. “If the reflections are too faint or distant, our model might struggle,” they noted. This insight points to the complex nature of reflections. They vary greatly; some can be sharp and detailed, others vague and diffuse. So, it seems the new tool shines most when tackling strong, obvious reflections.
Curiously, one of the tool's most significant advantages is its non-generative nature. Unlike some other AI tools which create new elements within images, Adobe’s Reflection Removal only manipulates what was there, ensuring the authenticity of the original photograph. Users have control over the intensity of reflection removal, thanks to a simple slider. They can choose to retain some or remove all reflections at will.
Currently, the Reflection Removal tool is limited to RAW images, with plans for JPEG and HEIC support on the horizon. It marks not just another addition to Adobe's suite but also part of a broader trend. Adobe has been increasingly blending artificial intelligence with its creativity applications, promising users more efficient workflows without compromising creative control.
For now, creative professionals who want to try this tool will find it neatly tucked away within the Adobe Camera Raw Preferences Panel. All they need to do is enable the New AI Settings and Features Panel before they can begin cleaning up their images with enhanced ease.
