Adele's Million Years Ago Removed Over Plagiarism Claims

Judge orders streaming services to stop distribution amid legal battle with Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes

Adele's hit song "Million Years Ago" has hit quite the snag, finding itself at the center of legal troubles over allegations of plagiarism. Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes has taken the British singer to court, claiming her song bears "almost integral melodic consonance" with his samba classic "Mulheres," popularized by renowned artist Martinho da Vila.

The battle began to brew when, back in February 2024, Geraes filed his lawsuit, which quickly gained momentum over the months. The 6th Chamber of Business of the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro ruled for the immediate suspension of Spotify, YouTube, and other streaming platforms from distributing Adele's song—indicating serious repercussions for non-compliance. If the streaming services continue to host "Million Years Ago" without proper authorization, they could face penalties totaling R$ 50,000 for each infraction.

Geraes, frustrated by the lack of recognition for his work, argued in court for not only the removal of the song but also for financial restitution of R$ 1 million to reflect the damage done. His claim specifies additional demands, including the transfer of all related copyright rights along with updated royalties. "This melody is part of our history," Geraes asserted, underlining his passion for preserving the integrity of Brazilian music.

The saga took root when Geraes’ concern reached the public eye, following the shocking moment when Rildo Hora, son of the original arranger of "Mulheres," noticed the similarities at a celebration. Initial discussions led to formal notifications being sent out to Adele, her collaborator Greg Kurstin, and their music producers, Sony Music and XL Recordings, highlighting the alleged similarities between the tracks. Their legal team stated findings indicated nearly 87% of Adele's track had substantial overlap with Geraes' composition.

Through forensic analyses, the judge, Victor Agustin Cunha Jaccoud Diz Torres, explained how experts drew parallels between the music pieces, pinpointing areas like the introduction, chorus, and concluding sections as being particularly reminiscent of the iconic samba. This insight played a pivotal role, strengthening Geraes' claims and shaping the court's decision.

Despite the backlash, Adele's representatives have maintained their innocence, arguing against any wrongdoing. They express their belief there’s no merit to the claims made against the artist. The music industry's complex nature—where original compositions and collaborations often intertwine—often leads to these grey areas where artistry meets legality, and this case is no different.

For Geraes, this isn't just about seeking damages; it's about advocating for the rights of Brazilian songwriters everywhere. He views this case as groundbreaking, showcasing the importance of defending Brazilian culture and its rightful recognition on international platforms. His actions suggest he’s prepared to fight for copyright protections to shield other artists from similar fates.

So, what lies next for Adele? Considering the opportunity to appeal still stands, there remains the possibility of returning to the courtroom. Until then, "Million Years Ago" faces its uncertain future, one hinging on the outcome of legal maneuvers and potentially reigniting debates about creativity versus original homage.

Fans around the world are left awaiting developments, with many weighing in on social media, echoing sentiments ranging from disappointment at the news to the recognition of the importance of intellectual property. Some online comments capture the mood: "I love Adele, but it’s only fair to credit the original composer."
Moving forward, music streaming platforms await the court's final decision, as we explore the fallout of this pivotal moment between two different musical worlds.
